A Whale's Vagina

Don't be offended by the title of my post. Haven't you seen Anchorman? One of the funniest movies of all time, my friends. Classic quotes throughout, such as:

Ron Burgundy: Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

On May 23-May 28, we will be celebrating one year of wedded bliss in San Diego! I've never been to California [I know, I'm a true Midwesterner] and Nate hasn't been in years. It's warm, it has a beach, and they have direct flights out of Milwaukee at a great price. SOLD!
The only worry is about the phenomenon known as "May Grey" and "June Gloom." Apparently the heat from the desert and the cold from the ocean make the days there a little foggy especially in the mornings, then it may clear off for the afternoon. At first this really bothered me but now I don't even care. I just want to breathe some California air and maybe we'll just say inland during the morning hours where it will be sunshiny and fabulous.

We still need to finalize our hotel plans [most important factors=pimptastic pool and somewhat near a golf course for my hubby] and car rental but the tickets are purchased. I'm so freaking excited I can't stand it. And we are going to be under our budgeted amount [as long as we don't go crazy at dinner or something] which makes me even more ecstatic.

I heart vacations.

Anyone been to San Diego before? Ideas are welcomed.

  1. I love San Diego! When my brother graduated from the Marine Corps, my mom and I went out to see him and spend a few days there. My fave thing we did - going to the zoo! Unfortunately, it's not free like our zoo. I actually think it costs about $20.00 a person to get in. But, it was very cool. Also, be sure to spend some time in the Gaslamp Quarter. There are lots of great restaurants there, cute shops, and it's just a fun area to walk around. Plus, if you randomly decide to get a tattoo, some of the best tattoo parlors are there, LOL!

Oh, plus, since it's the home of the USMC, there's plenty of eye candy. Not that Nate isn't eye candy enough. ;)

  2. We went to Sandy Eggo in 2004. It was great. We had a good time!

Though we spent most of our time in LA/Hollywood. So, if you get a few spare moments, go check that out too!

We did go to the San Diego Zoo, but we felt it was over-rated (sorry Kristal!) and didn't really like it. I guess we're just spoiled by our free, AWESOME St. Louis Zoo! Check it out though, the zoo is always a good time!

I'm trying to think if I have anymore tips for you. Perhaps I'll be back! :)

  3. We moved to San Diego after the wedding! I can give you so many suggestions, probably more than you need. :) June gloom isn't all that bad, though it can be a little chilly. I can PM you with all types of restaurants, hotels, etc. How fun!

  6. San Deigo... all time favorite vacation of ours! You guys will have an awesome time. I also recommend the zoo, and you have to cross the crazy high bridge over into Coronado. Check out the Coronado Hotel (ideal for a picture taking fiend), and the island is just gorgeous. There's something about the beach over there.. it's less packed, and more romantic. We spent an entire day there, there's a cute strip of shops right across from the hotel, get some gelato... bliss!
    Good choice!

  9. Hooray for first anniversary trips!

San Diego will be awesome. Don't worry too much about the fog situation - it's really not all that bad.

I wasn't there for very long when I went, and spent most of the time at a friend's beach house...but even just driving around was fun because it's so beautiful and different from home!

  10. I went to San Diego a couple years ago and stayed in the Mission Beach area, which was really fun and a total surf town. I had 2 breakfasts there that were out of this world. One at a cafe in Mission Beach called Kono's...and another place called Hash House A-Go Go. We also drove to La Jolla which was beautiful. Oh! Wahoo's Fish Tacos was also a really good place to eat. It is a chain, so you'll probably see a ton of them. I promise I did other things besides eat when I was there.

  11. Hey! I just got back from a week in San Diego for a conference. We stayed near the airport but would skip out early each day to go exploring. Definitely make the 14 min. drive to La Jolla and see Seal Beach. Coronado island is gorgeous and you can take a tour of Hotel Del and maybe see the ghost! Old Towne was pretty touristy but still fun. Mission Beach and Pacific beach were also good times! I agree with Kristal on Gaslamp, definitely go spend some time there, along with Seaport Village. You can take a tour of Midway too! TONS of stuff to do, you'll have a blast! Make sure you bring a jacket for the nights though because it does get a little chilly!
