Stitch Fix #6 | Birthday Box Edition

I haven't scheduled a fix since the last one I received on New Years Eve, and now that the weather is (sort of) turning into non-sweater weather, I figured it was time for a few new pieces. Also, I see many of you have been using my referral link, and I'm so grateful you are fueling my love for pretty clothes in a box mailed to my doorstep!

For this fix, I requested Kelley again, because she really seemed to catch on to my sense of style (which I don't think is *that* hard to nail, if it's long and colorful I will probably like it!). My note to Kelley said, 'I'm going out to dinner and drinks with a big group of friends for my 35th birthday at the end of the month, so I'd love something to wear for that night. It's still cool here, highs in the 40s, so nothing too summery just yet. I love a casual, comfortable look for everyday style.'

My fix arrive two days early, and of course I peeked online before I opened my box. But Kelley sent the most personalized note I've received thus far, and it made me smile. She said she spent time on my blog, Instagram, Pinterest, and Flickr accounts and learned that we share the same anniversary. So obviously we are meant to be (Hi, Kelley!).
2016-04-11_0001

When I first opened the box I noticed it was full of a LOT of blue, a color I like but don't always pick from the rack first. I noticed she sent me shoes now that Stitch Fix is offering them, and also a scarf as an accessory. Normally I like to stick to tops but yeah, that gets kind of repetitive after awhile.

2016-04-11_0002

The most I've ever kept from a fix is two items per box. This? Might be my first 4/5, but I'd love some opinions before I send the loner back (or maybe not? Or maybe I'll keep three things, I can't decide).

Stitch Fix #6

1. Diba Delmara Embellished Lace Up Sandals | $60
2016-04-11_0003
First thought when I pulled these out? I like the sparkle! And what in the heck am I doing to do with those long strings? Oh, no, gladiator sandals? I am not trendy enough for these, but I'll try them on anyway.
Diba Delmara Embellished Lace Up Sandals $60
I couldn't decide how to tie the strings, if I should keep them all bunched up around my ankle or if I was supposed to make them lace all the way up my calf. But upon scouring Pinterest, I found this pin and I do actually like this style more than I thought I did. The problem is that the strap part seems to be too small and might need to be back further on the widest part of my foot? I don't really know, will have to try them on again tomorrow. Also, time for a freaking pedicure, Julia! Geesh. In my defense, we are still not quite to sandal weather, so much like shaving in the winter when we try to hibernate in Wisconsin, pedicures aren't a top priority.

VERDICT: return (probably). Let me know your thoughts, fashionistas.

2. Gilli Jessie Maxi Dress | $74
Gilli Jessie Maxi Dress $74
Kelley thought this should be my birthday dinner outfit, and I do like maxi dresses in general. The price tag is a little bit worrisome and immediately I had to ask myself if I could find a similar maxi from Old Navy for 1/4th of the price. Hmmmm.
Gilli Jessie Maxi Dress $74
But trying it on did make me feel more excited about this dress. For one, it's stretchy and extremely comfortable. I can wear a regular bra with it, which is always a huge plus for me, and it's also quite long.
Gilli Jessie Maxi Dress $74
I think the neckline is very flattering on me and I like the navy color. Lots of pros for this dress, no cons other than the price. But now that I think of it, I have three other maxi dresses, all from Old Navy. One is sort of falling apart and the others I bought as 'nursing friendly' dresses right after Porter was born. This means that they are both really huge in the chest and don't flatter me anymore. I think this Gilli dress is much more flattering and NOT falling apart right now, so I'm leaning towards keeping it.

VERDICT: a keeper

3. Octavia Garland Floral Print Infinity Scarf | $28
Octavia Garland Floral Print Infinity Scarf $28
Kelley said she saw many floral scarves on Pinterest, and sure enough---I am infinity scarf obsessed, and I love florals. She wanted me to pair the scarf with the maxi dress, so I did and I loved this look even more than the dress without it!
Octavia Garland Floral Print Infinity Scarf $28
I don't know that I *need* another scarf but this one is lightweight and should work through spring and probably into summer for a bit. Kelley mentioned pairing both the scarf and the maxi dress with a cardigan I kept from my very first fix last July, but I didn't like that look as much. Too much material, too matronly or something. Great color combo but too much going on with fabrics around my torso. Right?

all together

VERDICT: keeping the scarf

4. Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse | $68
Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse $68
When I saw this top, I had to double check my Pinterest board to see if I had pinned it. I haven't, but I see it pop up on Pinterest and the Facebook group all of the time, and I've always loved the lace. Kelley said she was worried it would be too short, so I figured it would be boxy on me, but I think I love it?
Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse $68

Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse $68
The back is so pretty and I like the top with a long necklace, go figure. I'm slightly perplexed about bra selection with this top, though. I despise strapless bras and actually don't even own any that fit me right at this point. I am wearing a racer back bra here that is a dark green color, hoping it might blend in well with the see through lace. I also tried a nude regular strap bra and thought that looked worse. Also, Cecelia took the next two pictures for me. Nailed it! She is three years old, and my camera is bigger than her face, so this was an experience.
Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse $68
It's not a tunic by any means, but the length seems appropriate and I love how it's flowy but not totally shapeless. I think it looks great with the jeans I'll show you next, and also with black pants. Perhaps *this* will be my birthday dinner outfit instead of the maxi?

VERDICT: keeping

5. Just Black Adorra Skinny Jean | $88
Just Black Adorra Skinny Jean $88
I saw Kelley sent me jeans and was bummed because I bought two new pairs a few months ago that I wear all of the time. BUT these are super dark washed, definitely darker than any others I own right now. And they aren't weirdly faded in spots so they seem a lot more dressy than my other go-to denim. When I tried them on I literally felt like I was wearing a pair of stretchy leggings. I love denim with stretch, it's the only way I can tolerate jeans because I love actual leggings so much.
Just Black Adorra Skinny Jean $88
They are long enough, tight but not restrictive, and seem really grown up with the uniform darker wash. I don't love the price tag but I know most name brand jeans are at least $90 if not more, and I still have a soft spot in my heart for my high-end denim I bought before we were married. And THOSE babies were closer to $200, even ten years ago (and I still wear them, but most are quite flared/bootcut). So there you go, my justification for the price of these jeans. Because the fit is amazing, it's just the cost that has me freezing up a bit.
Just Black Adorra Skinny Jean $88
Best shot we got of the length, and Cecelia said, 'No head though, I didn't see your head.' Artsy, my girl!
Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap-Sleeve Blouse $68

VERDICT: probably keeping

So with a 4/5 box, that means I am super close to getting the 25% discount they award you if you keep all five items. And if I did my math correctly, it will actually be more expensive to buy the four items I really like without the extra discount, than it would be to just keep the shoes. I would pay $20 more to keep the sandals at this point!

Then I think maybe I shouldn't keep the maxi dress either. It's cute and flattering but is it really worth $74 (or $56 after the discount, assuming I keep all five items)?

The more I stare at these pictures, the more I really love the Brixton Ivy top and the jeans. The maxi dress and scarf are great, especially together, but I probably wouldn't hate myself forever if I sent them back.

This is definitely the most wishy-washy I've been with a Stitch Fix post so far! Probably because I'm writing it the same day that I got my box and I'm tired. Help a sister out, what do I keep?? And as always, here is my referral link if you want to try this for yourself.

  1. I love all of them except the shoes (but if it's cheaper, I would get the shoes and sell them in the fb site) great fix!

    1. That's what I'm thinking, but I'm not sure many girls on there wear a 9.5! We will see.

  2. You have to keep the maxi dress; it's so cute! I love the diamond at the center, it makes it so much more interesting than most boring maxi dresses. Plus it's very flattering on you. I also like the shirt and the jeans look nice. I'd keep the shoes although I have no idea how you're supposed to wear them. Stylish shoes are so confusing.

    1. Seriously, so confusing. The inspiration pins I found only make me feel even LESS trendy somehow!! Ha.

  3. Hey Julia - I think you should keep all of the clothing items! That Maxi is amazing!!!!! I love the detail at the top... And of course keep the flowy-lace top & those "dressier" jeans. I am more for quality than quantity... Those sandals are super pretty - and I do like that pin. I say go for it all!!!

    1. Totally agree on quality versus quantity--my new motto lately. And for me, something that fits well is worth it's weight in gold!

  4. First of all, everything looks good on you. The colors are flattering and I also like how the top and dress could be considered "multi seasonal"- they don't scream just spring or summer. Everyone's budget for clothes is different so it's kind of tricky to talk about prices because what people are willing to spend for clothes is so personal. For me, personally, I wouldn't buy the dress or the top because the price seems too high. I live pretty close by to a TJ Maxx, Kohl's, H & M and others that provide cute clothes at fairly reasonable prices (especially Kohl's if you keep track of their coupons and promotions they run so often). That top is super cute, but for $68, you could find at least two cute tops for that price at places like TJ's. I also like the jeans. I, too, have a darker pair of jeans that look more dressy than regular jeans and seem more appropriate for certain occasions. The price of the these Stitch Fit jeans doesn't seem as "off" to me as the price of the top and dress. Jeans are pretty pricey in general these days. Those are my thoughts- good luck trying to decide!!

    1. Agree, the jeans aren't too pricey and agree, places like Kohl's can be a HUGE money saver! I just have a hard time with fit for most of those clothes, many times the tops are too short and boxy and nothing is all that long. That's my excuse at least! Ha, thanks for the input!

  5. Wow - great fix!! The shoes are the only thing I don't love either. I feel like you have to keep that maxi dress + scarf! (and agree - not with the cardigan) The top and jeans are perfect! Have you joined any of the Stitch Fix buy/sell/trade groups on Facebook? If I have a fix that is a 3/5 or 4/5 I try to sell the last item to someone on those boards so I can keep the discount. Win/win!

    1. Yes, I love the FB group! Will attempt to post there later today, nervous that nobody will want or fit into the 9.5 shoes so I might be stuck with them for now.

  6. Yes to all. The top and jeans for sure (and I can't see the green racer back bra, so I think that's a good choice). I'm always a vote for scarves and I love that floral print. The maxi is fab - yes, you could buy one cheaper at old navy but it won't have that great detail at the neckline, so I think it's worth the extra moola. Last, the sandals - I think they are super cute! And if it's cheaper to get them, then you definitely should. :)

    1. Okay, yes, that is what I was thinking about the maxi and finding another one for much cheaper. And I am still obsessed with scarves, too, hope it never goes out of style;)

  7. I understand the cost issue, because I never buy myself stuff... BUT, the dress and the scarf are GORGEOUS on you. STUNNING. Do you have any weddings coming up this summer? Or other big events? Or even just some kiddo birthday parties? I'm trying to justify it, because i really, really think you should keep those. :)

    1. YES, we have a big wedding this summer, Nate's brother is getting married. Maybe the maxi and scarf would be a great rehearsal dinner outfit? I think for the wedding itself I might try Rent the Runway, because Nate is the best man and will be super dressy in a new suit. Also, we are going to San Diego next month for a little vaycay and the maxi would be a good California dress, yes?

    2. YES. Justified. Keep it. :)

  8. I love it all! Although, I agree the band on the shoes looks a bit awkward. You could get a lot of use out of that maxi as well - summer/spring friendly and you can dress it up or down. I think I would wear the blue lace top and black pants for your birthday dinner. Good luck !

    1. Now I'm thinking maybe the shoes are a half size too small, and I could try to get an exchange? I mean, my foot isn't THAT wide or anything! Thanks for the input, I agree---jeans and blue top seem like a winning combo for dinner.

  9. You have to keep that dress! it's fabulous! And as a stitch fixer myself, I know the quality is good. Much better than old navy! You can be wearing that dress for years to come!

  10. Keep the maxi!!! It's gorgeous and it fits so well - and I know how hard it is to say that when I'm also quite tall! You will definitely wear it a lot this spring and summer. I love that and also the jeans. C'mon, you haven't had a fix since the new year ;)

  11. The top and jeans look amazing on you - really impressed by the stylist's choices, as it does seem like she really got you but a little more dressed up! The maxi and scarf are great too. I'm with you on the shoe uncertainty and am not a fashionista, so I'll leave that recommendation to the other ladies! But you look fabulous!

  12. Love the shirt, your arms look great in it. Add a moto style jacket over it and wear with the jeans for your birthday night out. Scarf is nice too, but you can get a similar style cheaper at Marshalls/TJ Max. I like the dress but I think you're right about the price. Shoes are just eh for me. Great blog, love your attention to detail. And, I have a Cecelia too!

  13. You definitely have to keep the dress and the scarf- they look fantastic on you! If anything, I would send the shoes back.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Please keep the dress and scarf! It's hard to tell on the sandals with that from-above angle, but the clothes look fantastic on you.

  15. I think you have a 5/5 if you can trade up the sandles a half size. They're very cute, just look too small across your foot. I love the jeans and lace top. It is so flattering and pretty and the bra seems like a great choice. Yes, you could probably get a cheaper maxi at Old Navy but it won't look as good. You could also try selling the sandles on the board. Just wanted to offer a tip, I learned the hard way paying a lot for shipping, PayPal allows you to print out shipping labels at a discount.

  16. I agree that the dress is awesome! And the blue top! And the scarf! And with your trip and rehearsal dinner, that's a great excuse to keep it. The blue top is beautiful! I have a couple lacy tops like that and the bra part always makes me pause. You can't even see that one.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I got these shoes and I am in the same boat as you -- I have NO clue how to wear them, but it would probably be a better deal for me to keep them as a whole box deal! This is such a dilemma!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ooh I love the Brixon Ivy Jarred Lace Detail Cap Sleeve Blouse and Cecelia is a great photographer. The lace top and jeans definitely looks cuter for going out on your birthday.

  19. Definitely think the last two items (top and jeans) are most flattering. I think that the length suits your body and your arms look great in them. You should highlight them more. the color is also good on you. While I like the color and style of the maxi, I think it makes you look even taller. You should do different color top and bottom to break up the eye (oppposite of a shorter, squater person like me). The shoes don't look that comfortable and being a mom of 3 doesn't seem practical if you have to wrap it around each time.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Julia, that maxi looked beautiful on you! I worry about price sometimes too and much of my closet is from Old Navy these days. But I have learned that sometimes you get what you pay for. That dress is a little more of an investment but not a terrible price point. And it looks like it would hold up well. I loved everything in this stitch fix for you; you looked great in everything....so fresh for spring! Keep it all. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. I don't like the shoes, but if it saves you money to keep them, keep them and you could sell them on ThredUp or something. Everything else I love! I love the Maxi Dress and think you're forgetting that Old Navy isn't as cheap as it used to be. It would probably cost you $40 there and the quality wouldn't be great. Love the scarf and especially love the top and I can't see your bra at all. You look great in everything!!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I'd keep all but the shoes and (gasp!) the jeans...they seem "bunchy" around the ankle and honestly, LOOK like leggings they way they fit. So if something is gonna look like leggings (at least in photos!), just wear leggings!! :D

    ReplyDelete
  23. Yikes, again I think all those piece are high priced, but I hope that they last a long time. While I too love the maxi dress, I was just at JC Penney's over the weekend, and they had a whole wall of solid colored maxi dresses for $29.99. It's probably easy for us to all say those pieces are all cute clothes, but it comes down to what you really love. Of course, if they were at Target, it'd be much easier to scoop them all up. I do love that blue top though, it's something different. The jeans are too tight like leggings, so I'd personally pass on those. The sandals, meh. If you choose the maxi, let's hope maxi dresses don't go out of style in 5 years. :)

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would buy them all (resell the shoes on FB) and not worry about the prices. It's so hard to find time to go shopping as a mom...sure maybe you could find similar items for cheaper if you really searched. But your time is also worth $$
    You look great, keep!

  25. LOVE the scarf, especially over a sleeveless top/dress. And than pants you have to keep. They look amazing.
