Weekend in review

Whew, what a fun weekend. Wanna see some pictures of our fun [besides the numerous projects]?

We went to The Riverfront Pizzeria for some awesome pizza. Here is the crew, thrilled because I asked a random person to snap our picture before we devoured pizza. I forgot how awkward that is for everyone involved and I used to pull that move ALL the time in college.
Mom came bearing gifts, of course. She got us matching pajamas! Mine in pink and hers in blue but both providing extra long inseams. Never mind that the shirts make us look slightly pregnant---we are going for the comfy look.
Ah yes, more gifts wrapped in coordinating papers. We should have guessed.
Yankee Candles!! And enough for one in each room! I am absolutely obsessed with these candles and rarely splurge on them for myself. So Mom went all out and now our new duplex smells like a little slice of heaven [ or peaches, but whatev].
Henry got a new toy as well. His is the long bone version of a tennis ball and let's just say he won't let this baby out of his sight. I LOVE when dogs use their paws like hands.

We also spent a lot of time chatting, drinking coffee and tea, watching HGTV, went for a walk in the 34 degree weather [so proud of us Missouri girls!], went to church, and Mom gave me some awesome foot rubs. She's the best and I'm going to miss her! Come again soon, Mom!

****update: I totally forgot to add that we rented the movie "Across the Universe" Saturday night and is was pretty sweet. And by 'sweet' I mean it made me vow to avoid LSD, psychedelic mushrooms, and acid for the rest of my life. There was seriously an entire scene that represented a major trip on some sort of illegal drugs and it was pretty creepy. Weird stuff, I tell you. But the music was unbeatable, the main actor was totally adorable with his English accent, and it was a good love story. We WANTED to rent "August Rush" but apparently it's not out yet. But I'll take any chick flick I can get these days!****

DIY kitchen curtains: project complete!

Mom is napping before her flight back home so I'll catch up on some posts if you don't mind.

Our kitchen curtains are complete! Total price including the curtain rod and fabric=$63. I know you can buy store-bought panels for much cheaper but it's hard to find printed fabrics in the correct colors for our kitchen, so we splurged a bit. Total time spent sewing=2-3 hours? I don't know because I just observed the sewing done by Mom:)

Here is the fabric we chose: I love stripes and the colors are perfect for pulling it all together. We had to make the top 4 inches vertical stripes to add length but I love the result.

Fully closed [not going to happen much]:And pulled to the side [my favorite way]:
I know the orange stripe doesn't perfectly match the walls but that is okay. It's supposed to blend and represent the same family more than being a perfect match. And of course the browns tie in with all of our wood. I like how the fabric is sort of 1970s [which goes with the old/vintage parts of our kitchen] but the stripes are more modern [which is for our updated stainless steel parts of our kitchen]. Am I reading too much into these curtains or what?

Meanwhile, the boys were hard at work on one of the final kitchen projects: installing the new microwave. Please note the light fixture as well---I will explain shortly:

Ta Da!

Here is the REAL light fixture Nate picked himself and spent three hours installing. Apparently the electrical stuff is pretty challenging in an old house. And remember how the previous picture showed a light without the glass cover? That's because Nate accidentally hit the glass during a project and it cracked. There were many cuss words floating around the kitchen at that moment. But luckily the lighting store gave us a replacement shade for free! So all is well in the land of Nate:

I would now like to show you the final before and after shots of the kitchen. Remember, the only thing left to do is the back splash and we might do it sooner than later. We'll see.

1. Right hand wall BEFORE, complete with wooden built in: And right hand wall AFTER without built-in and with our fabulous new microwave. The stove obviously stayed from the original kitchen because it still works and I think my in-laws have purchased enough appliances to last them a lifetime:) Maybe someday we'll replace it but then again, I don't really care:

2. Left-hand wall BEFORE, complete with hideous yellow counter top:
And left-hand wall AFTER with our new fridge, cabinets, counter top, sink, and Nate's under cabinet lighting. He's very proud of this as well:
3. And the front wall BEFORE where the old fridge [now in the basement for storage] and stove used to sit:
And AFTER where we have our little breakfast table. And we even use it! You can kind of see the textured walls in this picture if you look hard enough:

Whew. When I look at the grand scheme of things it's easy to see how hard we've worked on this kitchen.

It was worth it. There, I said it. :) But I'm so happy it's finished. And I don't want to do another one for YEARS.

A Whale's Vagina

Don't be offended by the title of my post. Haven't you seen Anchorman? One of the funniest movies of all time, my friends. Classic quotes throughout, such as:

Ron Burgundy: Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

On May 23-May 28, we will be celebrating one year of wedded bliss in San Diego! I've never been to California [I know, I'm a true Midwesterner] and Nate hasn't been in years. It's warm, it has a beach, and they have direct flights out of Milwaukee at a great price. SOLD!
The only worry is about the phenomenon known as "May Grey" and "June Gloom." Apparently the heat from the desert and the cold from the ocean make the days there a little foggy especially in the mornings, then it may clear off for the afternoon. At first this really bothered me but now I don't even care. I just want to breathe some California air and maybe we'll just say inland during the morning hours where it will be sunshiny and fabulous.

We still need to finalize our hotel plans [most important factors=pimptastic pool and somewhat near a golf course for my hubby] and car rental but the tickets are purchased. I'm so freaking excited I can't stand it. And we are going to be under our budgeted amount [as long as we don't go crazy at dinner or something] which makes me even more ecstatic.

I heart vacations.

Anyone been to San Diego before? Ideas are welcomed.
