Cloth Diapering update

We have officially cloth diapered Truman for a month now, since we waited for his cord to fall off for the first 3 weeks, and overall we really like it. I figured it'd be nice to do an update because I've already learned so much actually DOING the CD thing versus just reading about it---quite the difference!

You may remember my other posts about cloth diapering but if not they are all here for your pleasure. We chose to go with the most inexpensive method of CD'ing which is prefolds plus covers and my 36 infant-sized prefolds have certainly racked up the miles on baby boy. The sad thing is that he's already grown out of this size which was a LOT sooner than I anticipated even though Green Mountain Diapers states on their site that they will last up to 10 pounds. In fact, the prefolds have been a little too small for a few weeks now but I just wasn't ready to take the plunge and purchase a different size. You see, although I don't really mind prefolds and covers they are extremely annoying to deal with at night and even during the day when mister man is wiggling all around on the changing table, freaking out, and ready to eat. You have to fold the diapers up, then wrap them around his body, then use your Snappi to fasten them, the apply the cover. That is a lot of steps to repeat approximately 30492 times in one day with a newborn and their hyper-active bowel and bladder systems! Although prefolds are a fabulous choice for your wallet in these early weeks because you get so much bang for your buck, they are a lot more time consuming in my opinion and there's definitely a learning curve when it comes to folding them correctly. We had numerous leaks early on because I wasn't folding them correctly then some more leaks because I wasn't applying the covers tight enough. I have those kinks ironed out by now and did go ahead and purchase a dozen size 'medium' prefolds to use until he's 30 pounds. They are a little bulky and big right now but that's okay---I'd rather use them for longer and have them be too large at first.

Here is the infant prefold fastened and ready to go on my baby boy:
IMG_8386

Here is my favorite cover by 'Thirsties' in the x-small size (way too little now):
IMG_8392

And in the size 'small' which is a little roomy but much better. It will be great with the size medium prefolds, too, but of course I didn't take a picture of the medium PF yet. Just imagine that I did, okay?
IMG_8387

So obviously, 12 new prefolds will NOT be enough to cloth diaper our little dude full time unless I do laundry every single day ( I refuse! REFUSE!). So after much debate, I caved in and am entertaining Nate's original idea to use the more expensive but exponentially easier pocket-type diapers. Basically, instead of having a separate prefold plus a cover that can be reused over and over again before washing, these babies are very similar to a disposable in that they are a one-time use diaper that needs to be laundered after he wears it. You just stuff an insert into a pocket and it's ready to go which cuts down on the application time quite a bit, since you aren't folding and using a snappi to the inner liner.

So I researched all sorts of diapers to death (I mean, really---it was kind of disgusting how much I researched this decision) and really wanted to try about 8 different brands before deciding which I liked best. But Nate convinced me to stick with 3 brands and get multiples of each, so that we can really try them out before tossing them in the wash. I found two websites that offer a 30 day money back return policy at Diaper Junction and Jillian's Drawers and felt best splurging on these diapers knowing that I can easily return them (yes, used!) if they don't work for us.

So what did I get?

Check out these babies!

1. The famous BumGenius One Size 3.0 pocket diaper, created in St. Louis of course! These are the only ones we got with velcro instead of snaps and they come with two different inserts, great to double stuff for nighttime. I swear, Truman is a 'heavy wetter' and can rip through all diapers in a split second so I'm all about double stuffing. And yes, he even wet through disposables--maybe more often than cloth, actually.

So freaking cute, right? It goes pretty high up his back at this point but overall the fit of these rock and I love how quickly the shell dries for us every time. It's a little early to say but I think these are our favorites so far.

2. The Kissaluvs Marvels One Size All in One Diaper. Technically it really is a pocket diaper, not a true 'all in one' but the insert is sewn inside and pops right out in the wash so you don't have to pull it out after use. But you do need to stuff it back inside once it's clean so I still think it's a pocket dipe.

Dang, does anyone else think my baby has MAJOR back in this puppy? The way the insert is sewn in makes the backside a little bulky especially on my young baby, giving him the illusion of a shelf butt. But remember, all of these diapers are designed to fit a baby from about 10 pounds on up through potty training so we are in the stage where all of them might seem a little bulky.

3. Fuzzibunz One Size diaper, not to be confused with their popular 'Perfect Size' diaper that comes in individual sizes and won't fit throughout the years. I kind of wanted to try the Perfect Size type but Nate wanted to stick with One Sized, and thus we have these cute little buggers. The interesting thing with this dipe is that you can manually adjust how tight the leg holes are with elastic and buttons. Very clever, Fuzzibunz! These come with two inserts as well and can be double stuffed pretty easily, too.

Now I must show that we do own two other 'fancy' diapers (any dipe that is not a prefold and cover is fancy to me), due to my St. Louis baby shower hostesses. They bought us our entire cloth diaper registry and I had these two diapers on there for fun.

1. The Dream-Eze All in One Organic diaper. This one is not a One Size and will probably only fit for a few more weeks but I love it and it's super sleek. Again, with the snaps...

2. And possibly my favorite one yet, the bumGenius Organic All in One, One size diaper. With a long name like that you know it's a good one and also the most expensive by far:)

IMG_8424

Please ignore my poor baby's temper tantrum and spit up in this pic. I had to move fast and then make it all better by taking him off his tummy after I snapped this picture:)
IMG_8425

So I won't go into great detail comparing each diaper but basically, we have 5 different types of 'fancy' diapers and they are SO much easier than prefolds. I'm still going to use the bigger sized prefolds but nighttime and daycare will definitely be all pockets at this point. I'm a huge fan of both bumGenius diapers we have right now and all of the others are pretty nice, too. We are trying to keep track of how many times he'll leak through each brand and how many hours they last and at this point the BG 3.0 are definitely winning out. I'm contemplating sending the others back and getting more of the BG 3.0 but we'll see.

The great thing about cloth, and especially these 'one size' dipes is that we can use them all the way through Truman's potty training and also for subsequent children thus still saving us boat loads of money. But I already told Nate that when we have our girl (God willing!) I will be forced to buy her at least a few pink and girlie printed diapers and he'll just have to deal with that:)

Okay, I could talk about cloth diapers all day but I will stop now. Let me know if you have any questions I should cover in the future!

Seven Weeks

Lucky number seven today and baby boy is recovering from a fabulous weekend with some STL friends. On Friday night, Hannah, Michael, Tilly, Kim and Mark drove up here and stayed until Sunday night. It's the first time any of them met Truman and it's the first time we've seen Kim and Mark since December 2008 since they've lived in South Korea this whole time. I was so sad to think that we weren't going to see them while they are back in the states for just two months before they return to Korea for a little longer, but they hitched a ride with Hannah and Michael and made it a group trip! SO good to see our traveling friends. And Hannah and I decided that Tilly and Truman would likely fall madly in love with each other upon first glance and truly, they did like each other a lot:) We had a blast with our guests and enjoyed the decent but chilly weather outside quite a bit and we ate our way through Milwaukee, too.

After our escapades around the city with friends (probably our most social and most eventful weekend since T was born!) Truman decided to take a THREE HOUR NAP on Sunday. It was divine because I got to snooze, too. Not only that but he also slept wonderfully during the night on Saturday night just from pure exhaustion, I'm sure. I never really thought babies were affected by being out on the town all day especially when they still manage to sleep and eat just like normal, but apparently he was a tired boy. I've come to realize that the more he sleeps during the day, the more rested he is overall and the nights tend to go better than if he's up all day long. Go figure!

His grunting has been a lot better since I posted my concerns on Friday, which makes no sense to me because I didn't change a thing with diet or anything. Basically, I'm leaning towards assuming this is a normal baby thing he'll just grow out of someday. But when we have our 2 month appointment I'll still ask about gas drops, diet change, etc to be sure. I think I can last until then as long as he isn't having his insanely loud grunting sessions every day now:)

Truman is smiling a lot more lately and I just can't get enough of it. We still have to work very hard to catch a smile and it's now my life's mission to get a smile in a photo and on video. It's hard work being a sneaky baby smile catcher, though, and I haven't had much luck besides these two pictures that somewhat show his grin. Also, note his right dimple:)

T and I have been enjoying the outdoors a lot more since I was released to exercise again last week. I've taken him on many more walks and two runs in the BOB, plus I've run twice more on my own, as well. Truman seems to enjoy the BOB because he'll usually pass right out with the jostling around and the fresh air....just another way to encourage baby boy to sleep, I guess! He still despises his car seat in general which is a bummer since he has to ride in the BOB with his seat for now but he gets over it quickly. I'm not freaking out as much when he starts to cry because he's still so content overall that his cries are few and far between and usually serve a purpose, like: 'Mom, feed me!' or 'I'm so tired, put me to sleep!' It's amazing how much my confidence has grown in the past 7 weeks with my parenting skills. It really does get easier, just like they say, even though we still have our bad days or moments when I have no freaking clue what to do. Overall I think that we are settling into a more comfortable pattern of 'Truman and Mommy time' and I just love it.

IMG_8517

I had another weepy moment yesterday when I put baby boy into the Moby wrap, turned off all the lights in his nursery, and started playing music for him while we danced around together. The Fray's 'Look After You' came on which has always been one of my favorite songs but Truman was just tucked right under my chin, staring up at me in contentment, listening to his Mommy sing and watching her dance like a fool and I swear he just looked so peaceful and happy I couldn't contain myself. I breathe in the scent of his little head and touch his sweet skin and immediately feel at peace with everything, happiness doesn't begin to describe it. And when I am successful at getting him to nap? Even better! Score one more for mommy-confidence.
IMG_8438

I'm not going to jinx it but they always say that right around 6 weeks, all babies reach their peak of fussiness and since we are at 7 weeks now I think I can say that Truman's fussiness really isn't too awful. I was always worried that he'd have an official case of colic since I had it as a child but again, I'm pretty sure we've passed the common start time for that, too (around 3-4 weeks, I've read). His temperament is just so calm and content and most of the time I find myself wondering how I got so lucky with this baby boy. His laid back attitude reflects to me and makes me more calm as a mom and I'm so thankful for that. I have no idea how moms do it when their baby DOES have colic or cries inconsolably through the day and night. Kudos to you ladies out there, because I think that would be incredibly difficult.

His personality is shining through more and more each week and I love the little 'Truman' things he does each day. For instance, he is really cranky after he awakes from a nap, like 'Oh no, where am I? Why am I so hungry? FEED ME LADY!!' He loves to stretch his arms out in a dramatic way once I release him from his swaddle---I think he might be an actor someday:) His little coos and grunts and squeals make me think he's talking to us in his own little baby language. And in the past few days he's shown us that he can sometimes put himself to sleep without us helping him which makes his momma VERY happy. Plus he's taking his pacifier more often now which I really think helps him soothe himself to sleep at times.

Enough babble about my baby boy, let's look at some pictures from the weekend events, shall we?

What a great weekend and seventh week for baby boy.

Grunty McGrunterson

I'd like to pick the brains of you readers out there if you don't mind.

In the past week Truman has morphed into Grunty McGrunterson. We are talking loud, frequent, intense grunting and squirming and straining. Imagine a linebacker clearing his throat over and over again and you'll get the auditory idea of what my baby boy sounds like when he's putting on his show. It's worse at night and the crazy thing is he'll usually keep his eyes closed and sleep through it like nothing is wrong, but sometimes it will wake him and sometimes it happens during the day, too. It sounds awful, you guys, and it's definitely affecting our sleep. Not cool.

Basically, I'm pretty much convinced he's working on a juicy turd or a rockin fart when he does this, and I know newborns don't have the most mature digestive systems so it takes them awhile to figure out HOW to poop/fart (crazy, huh?) Sometimes he is productive and rips one then calms down but other times it's a lot more difficult for him and I feel so badly for him when he can't produce the poot he needs. I guess I should mention that Mister T has always been a vocal baby, and even at the hospital the nurses commented that he has a little song he sings with cooing and talking to us. But the watch-out-I'm-going-to-blow grunts are newish and freaky. I never thought I'd be my son's cheerleader when it comes to mustering out a fart but it really does make me giddy when I hear him rip major butt because I know he'll feel better. And sometimes he'll smile after his accomplishment then pass out so you know it was a good one:)

We've tried bicycling his legs and sometimes it works wonders but other times he gets supremely ticked at us for even attempting this feat. I am usually successful in burping him after feeding but not every time, so I'm not sure why he is so gassy. He's not spitting up a ton but just what I assume is a normal amount for a 6 weeker. He's not crying in pain or inconsolable at all. He still eats like a champion sumo wrestler and seems to feel just like his usual content self...if it weren't for those pesky trapped farts in that little tummy of his. I mean, he's almost 7 weeks old which is right around the peak of fussiness for all babies so I can't say he's happy 100% of the time but it's not like he's completely changed temperaments or anything. My diet hasn't changed. He's not running a fever.

So what does all of that tell you readers? Is it just a 'normal' baby thing that will pass with time as so many articles seem to indicate? Apparently there is an official disease called 'Grunting Baby Syndrome' or GBS out there, which I find rather entertaining but it does make me feel like maybe this is no big deal. I called the doc earlier this week and they seem to think it's normal for him at this age but when we go in for his 2 month appointment I might pick their brains a bit more.

I'm worried that he might have a touch of dairy allergies but then again, he really doesn't have any of the other symptoms for it. And you might suggest that I just 'cut out dairy' from my diet to see if it helps, and I'm all for that if it will work, but let's get real---I live in America's Dairyland state. If I have to give up cheese I might die and I know Nate would keel over instantly if I told him we could no longer make pizza and Mexican and all of the yummy dairy dishes of the world. Again, I'd do it in a heartbeat for Truman and maybe I'll try it out for a few days next week to see the results but it really would be a major lifestyle change for me (cheese mostly, I'm not a huge milk, ice cream, or yogurt person).

So anyway, I ask you dear readers: have any of you endured a particularly grunt-tastic baby? How long did it last? Do you think there might be something more going on here, in your personal opinion? I'm driving myself crazy researching and analyzing as you can imagine but I hate seeing him squirm around and I really like when we sleep well at night. Go figure:) Opinions welcome.

I cannot leave you without pictures of my baby boy in my new favorite outfit (do I say that about all of them, or what?)

Please note the chunky gut roll and try not to smile.

Just because I've never seen the T-man in black and white, nor have I had the pleasure of editing any of my photos, let's try this out for size:

And the butt? TOO cute. Ignore my lens cap please.

So yeah. Lots of fun digestive talk on this one, huh? You can tell I'm a new mom I guess.
