On being finished with the baby years

'So are you done having kids?'

Short answer: Probably. Yes. I think so. Yes, we are done. I think. Yes.
Long answer: So many thoughts on this, get ready for some classic Julia rambling.

I often heard this question when we were a family of four, before Porter was that second line on a pregnancy test. 'You already have one of each, why would you want another?' they would ask. 'They' meaning a lot of my patients who are known to lose their filters with age, the same population that has always produced the most shocking statements during my pregnancies.

Actually, let me elaborate on the filter-less declarations I've heard from patients. Ah, the crown jewel in the collection of observations on my pregnant body might have been from a patient who birthed seven children of her own. So she *knows* how pregnancy works, okay? And when she asked me if I was absolutely sure that Porter was a boy in the third trimester of his pregnancy, I said yes. She then informed me that I was carrying him 'right in the back' gesturing to her butt, and she knows that is how people carry girls. Not boys. So I had a fat butt while gestating a boy, which did not follow the guidelines. Good to know. Another patient once told me when pregnant with Cecelia that, 'I can tell you are normally a fit person but your face really looks pregnant right now, just kind of puffy.' Ah, good times. I love how pregnancy and babies tend to bring out the best, most kind comments from others!

But I digress.

The assumption that we would be done after one boy and one girl brings up numerous other issues, such as the notion that the sex of your children should determine the size of your family. We weren't done of course, even though sweet Porter wasn't exactly planned. In fact, Nate would have been quite content with two kids (hate to say this now that Porter is here, I promise Nate is super happy about our third baby!) as both he and I grew up with one other sibling. I have always said 'two or three' for my desired number of offspring and I'm so grateful we've been blessed with the greater of those two options.

Now that we have three children, I think everyone assumes we are finished growing our family. And they are probably (very very very likely) correct. Of course I can't quite slam that door shut and say with 100% certainty there will never be a number four. But I can say it with 99% certainty.

There are so many reasons to be finished having babies.

First and foremost: one of the very first things Nate said when I told him I was pregnant with Porter? "Well, we are NOT having a fourth, though." Hahahahaha. He is really 110% finished, guys, and obviously his feelings on this subject really do matter to me. I like to tease that he wasn't sure about having a third and look who was right on that choice (Porter is the besssssssst), but in reality I know he's seriously done now.

But also, I do feel incredibly blessed with our three healthy children. I hate to be a pessimist but I worry that trying for one more might be asking for too much. I know the chances for having a sick child don't necessarily increase with each subsequent pregnancy but it still feels risky. We could surely handle having a child with special needs and we'd love that baby with all of our hearts, but it would mean adding challenges to the lives of everyone in our family.

And I'm not getting any younger with my 34th birthday rapidly approaching in a few weeks. So yeah, 'advanced maternal age' would be my label should I actually get impregnated with mythical baby number four. And being AMA does mean a few more risks for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Obviously, things might also turn out TOTALLY NORMAL but some part of me believes it might not be the same experience of a healthy pregnancy and healthy baby four times.

Ah, pregnancy. I still truly love being pregnant but I think it has become less and less 'magical' each time, with more and more kids to care for while pregnant. Plus I need my beauty sleep with age and newborns are killer for the whole 'well-rested' concept. The first year is hard, man. Freaking awesome but also really hard.

But one of the biggest reasons I am nearly certain we are done is because I feel content with Truman, Cecelia, and Porter. It doesn't feel like someone is missing from this group. I feel happy and like I couldn't ask for much more in life with these kiddos in our house. This is a relief because when I was pregnant with Porter, I wasn't completely sold on that being my final pregnancy. Even when he was born, I sort of held onto the notion that maybe…..just maybe we could do this fantastic thing of pregnancy and birth and meeting a newly formed human being one more time.

And it's not that Porter has been particularly difficult, thereby changing my mind about a fourth. If anything, he is just so frickin edible and (dare I say it?) perfect that I can't imagine needing another. Which is strange, since I know a lot of moms love their babies so much that they want to do the baby thing over and over (and over and over) again. It's like saying, 'MAN I love this child so much, I never want this time to end and I never want them to grow up and change at all. Because this is the best. If I can't freeze time I just want to keep doing this same thing repeatedly since it's the bomb.' I completely understand that concept.

But in reality, I can't keep having babies forever. At some point we all have to be DONE with this baby gestating/birthing chapter in our lives. It's hard to admit I'm done having babies, but it's not all about me and how much I adore the scent of a newborn (intoxicating, I tell you). Babies turn into two year olds, babies grow into actual human beings that need to become productive members of society with their own lives to lead.

Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in this season of motherhood with small kids and think this will be the best part of the gig, that the peak of motherhood might have already happened sometime between hearing a baby's first cry and seeing his first wobbly steps. It's all I've ever known as a mom to be pregnant, nursing, pregnant, nursing, then pregnant again and nursing again. But now that I'm not nursing, not pregnant, and not actively plotting to become pregnant I find myself in this new, exciting stage of life. My body is finally my own. We are sleeping (!!!!) and finding our groove as two parents outnumbered by three kids. I'm realizing that our time as parents has really just begun and our kids keep getting more fun by the day.

I'll miss the impossibly small newborn sleepers but there are shadow boxes for that. I'll miss haze of the first few weeks with a baby but I've done my best to document that time here on the blog. I'll miss the anticipation during pregnancy of meeting a new member of our family, but I know the anticipation also drove me certifiably insane when it was actually happening. All of the firsts, the milestones, the innocence that comes with another baby will always hold a special spot in my heart. But instead of feeling like I'm losing something by admitting the baby years are over, I have to remind myself that there has been much to celebrate. And there's many more celebrations in store for us, too---newborn sleepers or not.

But that (highly annoying) 1% of me who entertains the notion of a fourth likes to whisper 'never say never' and 'these kids are amazing, you need another' and 'you're up for the challenge.' I hate to even admit there's a tiny part of me that would welcome a fourth child because I don't want it to seem like I'm fishing for people to say DO IT, or YOU COULD HANDLE IT, or whatever affirmation us moms sometimes like to gain from the internets. Because really, I'd probably feel a little wishy-washy about being finished with babies no matter how many children we had.

Three is a good number. Babies are magic and I'm glad we've had three particularly awesome ones complete with hundreds of memories and blog posts. I'm only showing one itty bitty baby Cecelia picture in this post because LOOK AT HOW TINY OMG THE SWEETEST GAHHHHHH.

Anyone want to let me borrow their newborn sometime? I can't be held responsible for any head sniffing that occurs.

Let it snow!

Snow before Christmas is awesome and magical and totally fine by me. Now I'm not a huge fan of temps in the single digits and wind that takes your breath away and makes you curse the great state of Wisconsin, but snow is fine for now. Let's warm it up a bit though, WI, alright?

On Tuesday, I pushed Cecelia's 18 month appointment back a few more days. We were rushing around like crazy trying to get out of the door by 8 after the kids slept until 7:15 (again with the WHO ARE THESE KIDS? comments). Truman was angry that he had to get dressed immediately and CC was also fussy, so I just decided to push it back and relax for the morning. It was a very good decision.

We baked (more) sugar cookies and decorated them with royal icing. The kids were quite helpful for a change and didn't even throw various inappropriate items into the running mixer (ie teaspoons, whole eggs, etc). It was actually fun despite me burning my hand to oblivion.

Then I checked the weather and saw it was a balmy 11 degrees outside, but sunny. And the 3-4 inches of snow on the ground remained from the other day. So we decided to go for it. I knew Cecelia wouldn't last long but Truman promised he would come inside when his sister lost it.

I grabbed my camera and couldn't stop chuckling at these knuckle heads and their snow gear. Poor Truman still needs a warm winter coat for the year, so he is wearing a heavy fleece with his rain jacket on top. And Cecelia in her snow pants is the best.

Daddy's gloves were also a hit.

We took Henry outside with us to play, too, and Cecelia thought it was her mission to walk the doggie all around the driveway. Truman was obsessed with snow angels and running/falling into the snow. I mostly just took pictures and laughed. It was a great time.

Eventually Cecelia figured out that she hated wearing gloves and wouldn't wear either pair I tried. It was all over at this point.

And what better way to warm up inside but to make some amazing hot cocoa? Also note that radiators make for GREAT places to dry snow gear. Nothing like grabbing them when they are dry and warm---same for bathroom towels after a shower.

I told Nate that night: 'Winter is a lot more fun with little kids.' To which he replied: 'Winter is awesome.' I'm still not ready to proclaim that questionable statement just yet, but it sure is fun to see our kids play in the snow and enjoy winter weather. I have awesome winter memories from my childhood in Missouri, too, but I think my Wisconsinite children will have more snow, more often to remember. And I think they are fine with that;)

Christmas Wish Lists for the Kiddos and a Target Gift Card Giveaway

{Giveaway is now closed, we have a winner as of 12/12/13!}

Another #MyKindOfHoliday post brought to you by Target. Keep reading for a $25 Target gift card giveaway!

Remember how I said I want to keep things super simple this year with gifts? I'm still on that wagon and have not purchased many gifts yet. I need to get on it, but I keep going back and forth over options. I just want every gift to be thoughtful and special and amazing and it's hard to find THE gift for people, you know?

For the kids it's not all that difficult compared to buying for the adults in our lives. In fact, Truman helped us make a detailed list of what toys he wants for Christmas. Cecelia doesn't care too much but she's fairly easy to read when it comes to which toys would rock her world;)

It's no secret that we wander the toy aisles of Target frequently, because it's a favorite activity for the kids and they are still surprisingly great about not begging for stuff and leaving when I say it's time. In our window shopping at the store and also with me searching on the website, I've come up with the top five gifts that would cause my children to squeal with joy. We will see how many of these end up under our tree this year!

Can I have them all, mommy?

Truman's 2013 Target wish list (age 3.5):

trumanlist

1. Bruder Man Tow Truck with Cross Country Vehicle: $52.99. The child is obsessed with our Bruder garbage truck and when our friend Eli got a Bruder crane for his birthday, Truman would not stop talking about it. He keeps asking to play at Eli's house because 'I want to play with his crane.' Ha! This is the tow truck Truman hand picked and I'm shocked it's not Eli's crane, but whatever. Must be something about the hook and lifting up a car that floats his boat.

2. Thomas and Friends Take-n-Play Shark Exhibit: $18.99. Truman still loves him some trains and also loves sharks. I love that this seems semi-small and won't overtake our entire family room like some other train tracks we own.

3. Play-Doh Magic Swirl Ice Cream Shoppe Set: $17.99. Although I personally despise Play-Doh and it's horrible never-ending crumb disaster, my boy loves it. He wants to make Play-doh ice cream and I cannot say no to the cuteness of this.

4. New Bright RC FF Drone Squad Missile Launcher Vehicle: $17.99. In Colorado, Truman played with my brother's 1980s remote control car and LOVED it, despite the fact it's batteries would die after 4 minutes. I think this one would last a bit longer and it shoots missiles, so obvi.

5. Nitendo Wii Console with Wii Sports and Sports Resort: $125.00. This one is all Nate's idea. I think Truman is too young for a Wii but Nate disagrees and thinks it could actually be a great indoor activity for us during the long winter. I don't want it to be another source of addicting screen time but I guess if he is jumping up and down and working on hand-eye coordination, I can't be a total Scrooge about this forever.

Cecelia's 2013 Target wish list (age 1.5):

cecelialist

1. Step 2 Lifestyle Custom Kitchen: $99.99. Both of our friends Henry and Gabby have awesome play kitchens at their house, and Cecelia is glued to those things every time we visit. I don't love that this is another giant plastic monstrosity, but I know she will go nuts for it. Perhaps it can be relegated to the basement once it's refinished to lessen the burden on the main level of the house?

2. Minnie Shopping Cart: $19.99. When we go to Target, Cecelia immediately grabs a toy shopping cart and pushes it around like a boss. I like this Minnie Mouse one and definitely want ours to have adorable little food items in there. Just like the kitchen, it needs to have 'stuff' to place and remove in order for CC to like it.

3. Pink with white polka dots 3-in-1Doll Pram, Carrier, and Stroller: $30.99. My mom is making Cecelia a custom baby doll this year (!!) and what baby doesn't need an adorable stroller that converts to a carrier?? Again with the wheels and the ability to push it all over the house = winner in CC's book.

4. Mega Blocks First Builders Lil' Princess 3 Story Enchanted Castle : $31.49. Cecelia loves playing with Truman's blocks and Legos and this is just precious, if you ask me. I'm really into the girlie, princess-y toys right now mostly because I still can't believe I get to buy GIRL toys!

5. Princess Cozy Coupe with Glitter: $59.99. She loves Cozy Coupes and it would be amazing to have one for the warmer 'driveway play' weather. I selected the glittery one because, duh.

And now for the $25 Gift Card giveaway!

What about the youngsters in your life? Do they want anything at all this year (wink)?
Check out the great deals on Kid's toys only @Target.

Then leave a comment on this post telling us what you would buy at Target for the kiddos. I will randomly select a commenter with the number generator on Thursday, December 12. I will need your email address for the $25 Target gift card and will post the winner on that same day. Good luck and happy shopping!

Thought of the Day

Sometimes I wonder how many hours of my life have been spent searching for a missing toy in this house. I mean, out of the seemingly endless amount of trains, toy animals, balls, and general CRAP we have strewn throughout various containers it always amazes me that the one thing Truman wants is the one mysterious toy that hides from me. And mocks me. And makes me want to pack up every single toy in this house and donate it all to Goodwill. For real. A needle in a haystack, if you will. And I'd like to consider my haystack fairly organized and 'controlled', but that darn needle keeps slipping into the depths of darkness.

Let me explain: my kids aren't (totally) spoiled rotten or anything, but they do have the typical middle-class American home that includes a ridiculous amount of kid paraphernalia. Ridiculous. We have boxes and bins that are supposed to conceal said toys. We have a freaking playroom that is supposed to house them all, too. But of course, the toys get scattered throughout our home almost always landing directly in the walking path of bare feet (i.e. legos and trains can nearly pierce the skin if you aren't careful, trust me). So yeah, we have a lot of toys despite my bi-annual C.O.T.C episodes (Cleaning Out the Toy Crap).

Tonight Truman could not find his beloved monkey, which is not a toy and is nearly a member of our family. So my heart was not quite as hardened at this point. We had Truman look for monkey by himself, like we always do when he 'loses' something. Because usually he is the one who knows where something is hiding. We don't step in and assist with the toy-hunt until he has truly exhausted most of his options. This usually works and I figured he would find monkey in no time.

However, after Truman, Nate and I searched for monkey for seriously 30 minutes or more I became increasingly irritated. How does one lose a lovey that is practically attached at his hip? We checked garbage cans (Cecelia??), the oven, under pillows, toy boxes, the toilet (Cecelia??), my work bag, etc. Eventually I found the monk-ster, hiding in the deepest, darkest crevasse that is our basement. Whatever. But then? Truman informs me that there is something else missing: a tiny red bouncy ball that he simply must have immediately.

I glanced around the family room, toys strewn about like usual. I peeked under the couch and then tapped out, saying, 'I'm sorry buddy, mommy can't look for anything else tonight. Be happy we found monkey and let's worry about the (blasted) ball tomorrow.' He didn't throw a mega-fit or anything because I think my tirade about how we have too many toys in this house during the monkey-search made him realize that mommy is about to lose it with his stuff.

Obviously, this is a first world problem. We are blessed beyond belief and having too many toys is hardly something to complain about when there are so many without these luxuries. I promise this rant doesn't mean I'm totally delusional and self-centered. But still, maybe I need to up the ante of my bi-annual C.O.T.C. to be monthly or something. I'm sure the kids would not miss half of the stuff I boxed up. I do actually have a few boxes of older toys stored in the attic and planned to 'rotate' out the older stuff for newer stuff but haven't done that since last Christmas. Which, of course, will be another time that will overwhelm me with STUFF. I sent out an email to our family this year suggesting that we all try a new and fun idea this Christmas: one gift a piece, and nothing expensive. Simplify. Enjoy the time together without worrying about buying a bunch of silly gifts. Remember the real meaning of Christmas. Novel idea, I know.

Of course, I think this idea will go over well for us adults but for Truman? The kid is becoming toy-obsessed and would probably hate us for eternity if he 'only' got one toy to open this year. Not really, I'm sure he would live, but I have a feeling we might break the 'one gift only' rule for him. Which only perpetuates the problem with the toy-takover of my home, so it's ironic that I'm whining now. Huh.

Anyway, I wonder if someone could keep track of the amount of time we spend looking for a missing toy. Would it be more or less time than we actually spend playing with that toy? Food for thought. I'm one toy-hunt away from doing a major purge. I'll probably forget about this by tomorrow, but it's nice to consider right now.

So ends my thought of the day on toys and needles in haystacks.

My Very Useful Engines

Happy Halloween from my adorable train conductors! Truman requested to be Thomas the train and he wanted Cecelia to be a 'little train.' So this is what I came up with. I can barely handle the cuteness and hope you agree.
