Ten Years

All the cool kids are doing it these days, and I'm a sucker for peer pressure. First, Leah posted about her prom.....then Erin went off and did the same thing. If that weren't enough, on Saturday I succumbed to MTV's 'True Life: I'm going to Prom' and like Leah, that episode brought back way too many high school memories.

Sequins, tears, fake nails, pictures, hairspray, more tears, The After Party, and D-R-A-M-A is what I remember from my Senior prom. Junior prom was no better but let's focus here on my Senior year. If you throw in one long term on-again-off-again high school relationship into the mix you are bound to have some sour memories. I suppose it was a learning experience but still, too much drama for my tastes.

Yes, ten [freaking] years ago I was wearing this blingtastic red dress while flashing my guns for multiple cameras. I loved this dress and secretly hoped my ex-boyfriend would be WAY jealous of my date for taking my hotness. Yes, envy was the look I was going for and I remember this dress being so tight [on my stick-like frame, mind you] that I could barely breathe. But if the ex thought he made a mistake, then the dress worked! Score!

Please note that my friend Lauren was way more ripped than me. Also note our hideous chunky heeled shoes. [[shudder]]

You've all heard me ramble about The Fab Five group of friends from my college years. Well, in high school there was my Trio of friends. Lauren and Laura were my besties and as dedicated jocks we traveled all over the great state of Missouri to play various sports. During these tournaments we became addicted to something I'm ashamed of, my friends. No, not booze, or boys, or drugs. We became addicted to finding long cars....then taking pictures with said cars for documentation sakes. You can imagine them, right? The really long boat-like clunkers that seem to take up two parallel parking spaces? Yeah, we loved hunting for them and their disgustingness. So when we had a limo for our group of friends my Mom totally made us take this picture. I was less than pleased, as you can see. But Lauren obviously loved it with her jazz hands and all. Laura looks a little restricted or stiff or something. But my look of disdain certainly tops the rest, no?

Oh, what? You wanted another muscle picture? Okay, this time with Laura. Like I said we were total meathead jocks.
So when I asked Mom to email me a few pics of Senior Prom she couldn't just stop there. What good would it do to reminisce about my Senior Year if my jock-like self didn't appear in any pictures? Exhibit A: Volleyball season. I am especially fond of this picture because of the creep-show in the stands filming video. Random dude is the only one in the stands on this day, huh? Odd. Also, my arms are freakishly long.

This is me killing a wicked set. Totally.
Defensive position, rocking the tight shorts and pigtails. The piggies were my signature look for sure....not a big deal when you don't have to worry about GRAY HAIR showing through on your part. Sigh.

Whoo, hoo. We won districts. These girls were such a huge part of my life back then. I've found many of them on Facebook [thank goodness for FB!] but I still wonder how everyone turned out over the years. I guess that is the point of our 10 year reunion this summer, huh?Total poser with the 'All District' title. I love this picture because of the stark contrast in body language between myself and Milldogg [on the right]. She is obviously thrilled:)

Ah, volleyball. How I loved you. You were always my second-favorite sport and therefore I felt less pressure with you. And really, the stanky knee pads were so much fun.

Then came basketball: my priority sport. You see, my Dad played at my same high school and went on to get a scholarship for college. I idolized my dad, you guys [still do]. I even wore his same number and everything. But when it came time for the scholarship part, I only got offers from smaller D3 schools who didn't have a PT program. And thus, my decision to break free from my jock-dom was made as I wanted the full college experience at a big school. Great decision, but sometimes I wonder what it would have been like to play in college. Oh well. Please observe my awesome manly haircut:Basketball is where my nickname 'Stick' came from. I was pretty scrawny and yet my perfectly sharpened elbows came in handy for holding my own with hoochies like this. I believe this is called a foul, my dear:

Oh, whatever. I'll just attempt a dunk on them anyway. Well, not quite a dunk but don't I have mad ups here? I'd probably blow a gasket if I pulled this stunt today at my old age. Also, I swear we had more fans at our games than these photos depict. It must have been a weeknight or something??I was clearly pleased with this speech by our coach. My posture is phenomenal and my green sports bra was just retired last year. I am not kidding, I think I still had it for 9 years after sweaty high school self donned it. Gross!
Ah, my girls. This is us after we won the Holiday tournament. I swear the big 'W' made everything okay in our little naive world. Man, the days of innocence before taxes, and health insurance, and bills, and grown-up stress were nice. But of course at the time, it seemed hard. Very hard. Go figure.

It's incredibly odd to think of how much changes in just ten years of your life. Back in 1999 my sole focus was volleyball, basketball, and getting into PT school so I could get the heck out of high school. I was still the Julia of today but I can honestly say I'm exponentially happier at this time in my life than I was back then. I look back on these pictures with a smile because I had some amazing times and formed solid friendships, but I am grateful that high school is behind me.

It's just like when I was watching the MTV show, my heart hurt for those little whipper snappers as they found their way through high school. It's not all bad but that whole teenage angst thing gets old after awhile. Finding yourself is hard, for real. And I can't even watch the awkwardness when the dude struggles to ask his crush to prom. Stab me in the eye, why don't you!

I'd like to grab them by the little shoulders and say, "Sweetie...your world will not end if he doesn't call you. And please, cover up your cleavage. You have bigger ta-tas at age 18 than I will ever have in my whole life. Not fair."

Kids these days...

Two more...

During a very intense Packer game I needed a distraction. So I made these two pages:

Seriously, wasn't that the most heartbreaking game ever? Poor Brett and crew. Poor Nate. I'm not kidding when I say he received about 30 text messages before, during, and after the game last night. I received 3 myself! Apparently that is the way we communicate with friends these days.

Speaking of communicating with friends, I'm warming up to Facebook now. And by "warming up" I mean spending entirely too much time on there. Just one more way to waste my night on the internet, which is another reason Nate whole-heartedly approves of my newest addiction. Eh, he'll live:)

And speaking of Facebook, Memaw [my VERY hip 76 year old grandma] called me last night. She is still mastering the comment function on my blog but is an avid lurker. Not only that, but she has a freaking Facebook account. When FB searched my email address book, it pulled up hers. I thought, "That is obviously a fluke." But then she confirmed it by saying, "I have one of those...whaddya call em?.....Myspace, er Facebook thingys." I love Memaw!

Gotta start somewhere...

...my first attempt at a digital scrapbook page:

It's a good start, I suppose. I'm fiddling around in Photoshop to help me sort through the million questions I have in my head regarding digi-scrapbooking in PS. New territories all around! Digi-scrapping, Photoshop, Facebook, negative temperatures, etc. Another reason why my blog title is fitting:)

Sunday thoughts

1. Is everyone gearing up for the Packers game? I am! Nate [unfortunately] has to work today until 6pm. The game starts at 5:30, so I hope he doesn't fake a serious illness to leave early:) I can't wait to see hottie-bo-body Favre whip some tail. This is one of my favorite pictures of the man:I'm pretty sure that 75% of men and 85% of women in Wisconsin would cheat on their spouse with Brett. Seriously. Go Pack, Go. And try not to get frostbite out there tonight! I'm not even going to touch on the subject of weather in this post. It's just too much to handle.

2. I caved and signed up for Facebook last night. I tried with all my might to resist the urge for one more internet site, but I just couldn't do it. I know my brother and brother-in-law are both on there somewhere, and I'd like to stay in touch with those boys a little better. Well that, and it's just fun/addicting/etc. Definitely more people over there than myspace.

I am slightly overwhelmed by this new site. It's foreign to me and doesn't really make sense yet. For instance: I get emails when people accept me as a friend, and it says something about "This person added details about how they know you" or something. So I look at that detail, approve it, then have no idea where those types of details are stored.

Also, isn't it kind of weird to have your first and last names on there? With email? It's just a lot more information than myspace, but I guess I'm okay with that.

I always assumed Facebook was for college kids [I guess that dates me even more, huh?]. But I noticed I can't "network" through my college because I no longer have a valid SLU email address to verify. So in some ways, it really is for college kids, huh? Now my only network is Milwaukee, which is fine, but I think I'd have a lot more in network friends if I could join SLU's.

I'll give it some time [ahem, I already spent like three hours on there this morning] and I'll try to be patient with it. Anyone have tips? Or want to be my cyber friend?

3. I made it to the gym before work yesterday! I actually woke up at 5:30 and was running by 6:45. The shower wasn't even that grodie and it started the day off right. I'm thinking about doing this during the week, too, but we'll see. It definitely makes for an extra long day. Also....speaking of work....Nate has his orientation at my job tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday. So I think we are going to carpool together and maybe I'll sneak him into the gym, too. He's going to be so cute strutting around my hospital! Totally squeezable.

4. And the grand finale: I FINISHED MY SCRAPBOOK!

All 200 pictures in just one week. Obviously I went for the "Speedy Gonzales" style instead of perfection. And it feels SO good to be done.

So some more pages:
It's a good thing Henry has his own scrapbook because he isn't taking over mine, or anything, right?

The bare dining room table is just calling my name for another project....

This means that one of my new years goals is complete! One down, two underway [church, running for the race], and two getting closer to reality [saving 15k, getting a wedding album]. The last two will happen once we rent our apartment, so we can save money. Still waiting on an official renter but it's nice to have some prospects.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

Bonus page

Just finished this one and I like it. I like it because I made this fun title with cardboard, ribbon, a metal "delight" tag, and script.
I'm going to start doing fun titles more often. I missed them. Now back to Oprah. She has covered Cold Stone Creamery and Christian Louboutin so far. The Container store is next. I'd say that makes a good show. I miss Oprah, too.

Scrapbooking thoughts [part two]

So here is my shelf-o-scrapbooks I've made, beginning with my freshman year of college through the present. My Mom gets the privilege of housing my high school scrapbooks [scary stuff, folks.]

One that I absolutely love is our Honeymoon album. I chose a Kolo album in aqua green fabric for this occasion:

When you have a trip or an event to cover, it's so much fun to include ticket stubs, itinerary, magazine clippings, etc. Hence the true "scrapbook" style:

Henry seems to like the smell of our honeymoon. Lots of blue backgrounds used for this.
One challenge I had with this album was the sheer number of photos to include. I think I had 200 or something ridiculous. In that instance, I could never ever have a one picture page or my book would be the size of the Bible [and I'd be burnt out in a day.] So it works to have a bunch of photos scrunched together when they have a similar theme. Then you don't even need a background paper or anything. Just pictures:

The last page of the book had our flight times and a little map of the island. I also included our room tab from the whole week....so that in 20 years, we'll look back on our "cheap" honeymoon and laugh at how much it cost.

Another personal fave: Henry's scrapbook. Yes, he has his own. Mostly just his puppy pictures since, as a new mom, I went a little overboard with the photos. It's super cute to see how much he's grown!

I wanted to show you guys this series. We tried to get the same photo of Henry on Nate's chest to show how BIG he became. The pictures are okay, but not perfect. I still love them, though.

I also made Nate a Spain album for his semester abroad. We had just begun dating at the time, so I tried really hard to impress him with my scrapping skills. It was my first attempt at making an album for someone other than myself. Back in 2002, I was big into ovals/circles for my photos. Now I'm all about squares.

So that brings us to today's album. Here is my chaotic dining room table. We all know how much Nate LOVES when I take the table hostage, right? It's pretty bad right now.

I've been using my pretty papers but not much else. I feel rushed with this album, knowing I have a butt load of pictures to include and I'd like to be done as soon as possible. It's not like that when I made the albums for our families. More on this in a bit.

I mentioned before that I love to handwrite and draw for my albums [I'd miss that with digital.] Here is a fun header for Hannah's shower and B.Party. The little metal tag at the bottom says "bride" and it's too cute.

Hannah's wedding: I had a ton of pictures for this one, and almost made it two pages. But then I kind of liked the collage look for her page. It keeps the eye moving on the page.

Nate's ski trip in two pages. I even found some cute skiing papers to use.

Love this paper so much, and I'm partial to the pictures, too:)

This page was fun. Yes, I showed up for part of my husband's b.party. Only for a few hours and only for one night. Totally G-rated while I was there but I can't verify anything after I left.

One of the first pages in this album: our Packers game. Nate loves this page, obviously. Since there are some good stories behind these pictures, the page includes a lot more journaling. Sometimes I don't journal at all, and sometimes I do a lot. Just depends.

Our rehearsal dinner and some wedding details. This will have to do until I get a REAL wedding album.

And the very first page in this album: Christmas 2005. Again, the ovals were my thing and now they aren't. I didn't even use a background paper for this page [the horror!]

So my thoughts? My best work is definitely the wedding albums I made for our families, pictures in this post. I didn't feel rushed, but I did pressure myself to make them absolutely beautiful and special. When I make my own albums I just want to finish and they don't turn out as well. Another reason I liked my wedding albums is because they were smaller and housed only one photo per page. That helped me focus on the picture and make each page special. But that simply does not work for all albums. Especially when you have a ton of pictures spread out over time [instead of one event only.]

If I go through with this mini-business for scrapbooking, I have a lot of decisions to make. Traditional versus digital. 12x12 size versus 8X8 size. How many pictures per page? How long will each book take me? How much should I charge so that I don't LOSE money, but knowing that I will not make a fortune on this either? And most importantly, would I live up to my own standards? I can be pretty hard on myself and I worry that I'll get frustrated with the results, always wanting it to be better.

Like I said, I have lots of ideas running around my brain right now. Once I sort through some of the ideas I will post on them, and ask for your help making decisions.

In the meantime, hope you liked the little snippet into my scrapbooking world!
