The List of Moments II

let's continue, shall we?

Moments 26-50
26. Begging my late Grandpa B. to pop out his dentures because it was the funniest thing I'd seen. He'd do it over and over and I couldn't stop laughing.

27. Giving myself a mud bath in a creek with my brother and friend. My mom lovingly took pictures of the debacle because we were so excited.

28. Hearing Nate's beautiful vows for the first time at the altar.

29. In Memaw's kitchen, helping her bake my favorite breakfast rolls. The smell of brown sugar and butter lingering in the air as she taught me how to prepare my favorite dish.

30. My family saying, "We're so proud of you, Jules" as I graduated from PT school.

31. The look on Nate's face when he's trying to cheer me up and make me laugh. This sometimes includes a classic little jig.

32. Playing with my Barbies in the most fabulous wooden Barbie house made by Pepaw. This bad boy had real working lights in each room, wallpaper, carpet, and hand-painted shingles on the roof. It was my pride and joy.

33. Peeking over the edge of the balcony before our ceremony to see so many friends and family there to celebrate with us. That special group of guests will probably never be together in the same room again.

34. Learning to drive a manual transmission car with my Dad in the passenger seat. No matter how many times I killed it he never got frustrated with me and told me to keep trying.

35. Waking our parents up at 5 a.m. to open our gifts on Christmas morning.

36. My Mom's daily lunch box love notes in grade school. Man I wish I would have saved those.

37. Oooo-ing and aaaaah-ing over pretty fireworks while laying on a blanket in the grass. Feeling the power of a big boomer shake the ground.

38. BBQ cheeseburgers off the grill on a hot summer evening. Most likely paired with french fries and baked beans, too.

39. Sleepovers involving 'truth or dare' and girlie movies.

40. The smell of fresh, clean sheets.

41. Road trips with Nate, spending hours in deep conversation and then perfect silence.

42. Henry's slobbery kisses every single time I come home, complete with smelly dog breath. And an eager wagging tail. It's as if to say, "I thought you were never coming home!" even if I've only been gone 30 minutes.

43. Back to school clothes shopping with mom each fall. Trying to keep a budget but somehow finding too many deals:)

44. De-stressing after killer exams with the best group of girlfriends a girl could have.

45. Stepping onto American soil after studying abroad. The sight of my parents waiting for me at the gate, immediately looking down to my new foot tattoo and asking, "Is it real?"

46. The first warm day when we can open all of the windows in the house to catch a refreshing breeze. The smell of fresh cut grass.

47. Catching lightning bugs with neighborhood friends on a warm summer night.

48. Smelling the salt of the ocean while listening to the waves break. Digging my heels into the wet sand and vowing to live near a beach someday.

49. The voice of my Mom coming in to turn off my alarm saying, "You don't have school today, it's a snow day." Then immediately hopping out of bed to play in the snow all day long.

50. Hearing Nate call me his wife for the first time. And being able to call him my husband.

Feel free to share your own memories. It's quite therapeutic, I must admit, but I think I'll stop at 50 for now. I'm sure I could go on and on but you get the idea.

The List of Moments I

In honor of deep, philosophical lists....I have another one for you.

Can you pinpoint some of the happiest moments in your life? I know I've only been around for twenty seven years but in my time, I have lots of memory snapshots that make me smile. If I condensed my life into a series of happy moments, ones that I never want to lose, it would look something like this list. The highlights, if you will.

Chelsea posted her "Life, as I know it" lists here and here. She considers her list as memories she hopes would pop up as her life flashes before her eyes. I like thinking of it that way, too.

Moments 1-25:

1. The car ride home with Henry after we bought him. His tiny little puppy belly resting on my lap the entire trip. Looking over at Nate to say, "I can't believe we got a puppy."

2. Getting the phone call from my dad when I was in kindergarten. He said, "Julia, you have a baby brother." And I immediately said, "I wanted a sister, but okay."

3. Learning to ride my first big girl bike [pink flowered banana seat, basket, and streamers included] without training wheels. The sound of my dad yelling, "You're doing it!" as he jogged behind me.

4. Hearing Nate say, "I love you, " for the first time while huddled in a Spanish bar. It was one of those times in my life where the world around me slowed down and I couldn't imagine being happier.

5. Swinging so high on my brand new swing set made my Pepaw, that I thought I might go all the way around the top bar.

6. Henry jumping up on my bed with a knowing grin, as my engagement ring was tied around his neck. And then, of course, the proposal:)

7. Seeing my grandparents dance to 'their song' at our wedding, tears streaming down Memaw's face and Pepaw grinning from ear to ear.

8. Running to the mail box my senior year of high school to find my SLU PT school acceptance letter. I was going to the big city for college!

9. Walking into my high school gym, all dressed up in a fabulous purple dress, as my name was announced for Winter Sports Court.

10. Bowls of Mom's homemade snow icecream after a long day of sledding and snowball fights.

11. Making forts out of the couch cushions in our living room with my little brother. Losing track of time as we pretended to battle the invaders.

12. Selling my bike at a garage sale so I could buy my very own Nintendo. Then playing Super Mario Brothers until my thumbs oozed from blisters.

13. Walking across the stage to receive my Masters diploma and hearing my family cheer from the audience.

14. The smell of Sunday morning cinnamon rolls at my parents house.

15. Buying my first pair of designer jeans while sweating profusely and questioning my sanity.

16. The look on my parents face when I come home for a visit. Being welcomed with open arms, hugs, and smiles.

17. Lounging in our hammock overlooking the Caribbean on our honeymoon, and staring over at my new husband sipping his coffee.

18. Running up thirteen flights of stairs with  my brother to see my first college dorm room. Then getting there to see hideous green stenciled flowers on the cabinets.

19. Dancing with my girlfriends in Spanish clubs until the sun came up. Laughing until our faces hurt. Experiencing a foreign country together.

20. My mom zipping up my wedding dress on my wedding day, then turning around to show my bridesmaids. Mom whispering, "I love you" into my ear before the ceremony.

21. Seeing Nate's face for the first time on our wedding day. Overcome with joy, relief, and happiness...and never wanting to let go of our hug.

22. Shooting hoops in our driveway with Dad. Coming close to beating him in HORSE:)

23. Camping trips with Pepaw, swinging on a rope swing out into the river, canoeing at sunrise.

24. Losing my first tooth and putting it into the 'toothfairy pillow' overnight, where it magically turned into a dollar bill by morning.

25. Replaying Nate's voice on my dorm room answering machine after his first phone call. Feeling the butterflies in my stomach every single time I listened to that message.

Does anyone have memories to share? Sorry for the lack of pictures but I'm hoping the words paint an image for you.

The To Do List

Lately I've been feeling very philosophical, very deep, very contemplative. Maybe it's the 27th birthday or the one year wedding anniversary making me reflect on life. I'm sure it has a lot to do with Keri. But whatever the reason, I've been looking at the grande scheme of things more often while deciding what really matters in this world. Suddenly a bad hair day doesn't seem to be a tragedy. If I can't find anything cute to wear I avoid freaking out and manage to remain calm. Who cares if the laundry is piling up at an alarming rate. Life is too short to stress over insignificant issues---and this is a difficult statement to make, coming from a true control freak.
But no matter how wild and crazy I get with this philosophical stuff, I will NEVER rid myself of making lists. I love them. The feeling of crossing items off makes me extremely giddy---to the point that sometimes I'll write down a 'to do' that I've just done, because I want to cross it off the list. Is that crazy or what?

Anyway, right before Nate and I started dating in the summer of 2002 I decided to make a list: things I want to do before I die. I WISH I would have saved that list but I still recall a few of the heavy-hitters from six years ago.

1. There was sky diving [eh, doesn't interest me so much anymore]
2. Being on The Real World [ick! I'm WAY too old for those shenanigans. And also too boring].
3. Travel to Australia and Hawaii [still all about this one]

The point is that in six years my life has changed a LOT. My goals have changed and my 'must do before I die list' has evolved also. I've just never taken the time to write it out but it's been floating in my brain for a bit.

I got this idea from Chelsea, who got the idea from Mighty Girl.

20 Things To Do Before I Die:

1. Succeed at my own creative business

2. Have healthy, happy babies [not THIS many, though]
[from Anvari.org]

3. Jam out at a Coldplay concert

4. Own a home with a wrap-around porch

5. Run a full marathon [our training program starts this week!!]

6. Stay in a Fijian above-water bungalow

7. Retire by the age of 55

8. See the Taj Mahal

9. Learn to surf

10. Eat tea and crumpets in England

11. Become a great cook

12. Snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef

13. See the Aurora Borealis

14. Learn to play the violin

15. Watch the sunrise in Hawaii
16. Take pictures of a volcano's hot lava

17. Set foot in all 50 States

18. Make a difference in one person's life

19. Learn how to sew [especially if there are magazine subscriptions involved!]

20. Ice skate in Central Park

Much of my list has to do with travel, which I guess says a lot about me.

Before I studied abroad my list would have been much longer but now I'm able to cross off several 'to do' items: Irish Whiskey in a Dublin pub, learning the Spanish salsa, standing inside the walls of the Colosseum, attending Easter Mass at the Vatican, and becoming fluent in a new language. I can also say that I've tried SCUBA diving, gotten a tattoo, become a dog owner [this was a big one for a long time], saw the Piton mountains in St. Lucia [Oprah says this is a must, and I listened], and learned to ski. I think these items would have been on my list a few years ago, too.

So what does your 'to do list' look like? Fun stuff, serious stuff, or a combo of both?

More lists to come...
