Aug 19: Urge to Chop

I am really hating my hair lately. Like, I seriously want to chop it all off. This is my haircut right now. I worked extra hard to get it looking somewhat presentable for this photo-shoot, but trust me when I say it does not look this 'nice' everyday.

This is more of my 'everyday' look---wet pony tail then a headband. Also note the hilarious giant bowling pin here and my frightened children.

So anyway, I want to cut my hair off really short. And not just this short, which was my dramatic cut from last November.

hair

I mean REALLY short. Bordering on manly short. Pixie cut short.

I know. WOW, right? Short.

Beyonce did it. Miley Cyrus did it (sort of, but hers is way edgy with the shaved sides). I totally want to do it.

The cons:
Nate will hate it. I worry I will age 10 years and look like a man. It will suck to get a haircut every 4-6 weeks to maintain this instead of my usual 2-3 months.

But I seriously cannot handle my hair. It's so much thinner now and I have lots of random breakage/shorter layers around my face that never seem to grow out. I wear my hair in wet pony tails 99% of the time because I'm so lazy/low maintenance with my hair right now.  Plus I have no desire to actually style it with a blow dryer and flat iron because even when I do, I don't like it that much. It just tries to curl and frizz and look a hot mess anyway despite my efforts. My hair wants to be curly but it's too long right now to really look cute that way, and forcing it to be straight is just not working anymore.

And so, I want to chop it OFF.

But I'm scared I will hate it. Or that Nate will REALLY hate it (haven't mentioned this idea to him yet, so if you are reading this, 'HI NATE!'. Or that I will look like an old hag/old man. But in the end it's just hair, right? I have an awesome stylist who said she will never allow me the hideous mom chop, so if I DID go super short I have faith she'd give me an adorable style. She won't let me shave my head which is my other option, but I think I can convince her to do a pixie-type cut.

Do advise. Can I pull this off?

UPDATE later in the day...

OMG. It's a sign. I just got this email today.

My favorite hairstylist is LEAVING THE STATE? I'm so mad at her! She didn't tell me this when I was in 4 weeks ago, and she is pregnant with her first baby and I wanted to rub her belly when it gets bigger and hear all about the baby next year. So mad.

And yet, it must be a sign that I need to chop my hair off with her, before she leaves me forever? I would not trust anyone else at the salon to make the initial cut just yet. They can do the upkeep on it once my favorite stylist leaves, I suppose.

So I just made an appointment for this Thursday afternoon.

EEK!! Thanks for the opinions. I'm going for it, so fingers crossed I don't hate it  completely. It's just hair, for sure!

  1. My hairdresser told me the reason my hair was breaking so much was because I was putting it up wet! Maybe try to give it a few months and see if you can get it past the "grow out phase'? I did that a few years ago (after never being able to grow it out past my shoulders) and now it's long and I love it! I have thin hair too, and it's so much easier to maintain/style being long- worst case scenario I putt it into a low ponytail and it still looks styled!

  2. You can definitely pull it off! I think it will look adorable on you. And like you said, it's just hair. If you decide it's not working for you, you can grow it out.

  3. You can totally pull it off!! And if you hate it, it will grow back very quickly!

  4. Yes! Short hair is THE BEST. I always agonized over the decision to cut it supershort, but every time I have done it, I have LOVED it. It's so easy to keep up with (minus the frequent haircuts), dries quickly, and looks great. And Nate may be surprised--my husband prefers my hair short. I'm in the process of growing it out right now and he's always hinting that I should go for the chop again. If you have a stylist you trust I say go for it!

  5. clearly your choice, but I'm not a short hair fan usually... I'm actually sad I chopped mine to my shoulders back in Jan and I'm still waiting for it to grow back.

If you are feeling it though, and brave enough to do it, go for it!!

  6. Do it! I love pixie cuts and you have the right facial features for a cut like that (you have petite features. I think ppl with fuller lips/nose have a hard time with this cut) And you won't look like a man! I think it would look great on you. :)

  7. Adding another comment- I think you would look really cute with that haircut and if you want to go for it, DO IT! I don't want to seem like I was saying it wouldn't look good- I actually think short would be fabulous :)

  8. You can totally pull it off. The shape of your face is perfect for that type of hairstyle.

And if you trust your hairstylist...what are you waiting for?

  9. I have had every length of hair from shaved to waist/butt length. I go back to pixie cuts every couple years and then I remember that they're more maintenance than say, shoulder-length or chin-ish length hair. And I loathe the growing out period. I'm growing out the pixie-ish cut I had when my 14 month old was born and I think I can finally get a good cut (you have to keep cutting & growing out the strange layers to get it to a good point) - it's finally almost brushing my shoulders.

  10. first of all, YES you can pull it off...I don't think many can but you definitely can!

My mom has a super short hair cut like that and honestly gets compliments ALL.THE.TIME. Sigh. i wish I had the face for it!

    Go for it!

  11. Go for it!!!! I always think they look so cute on people and wish I could pull one off. It's just hair and will always grow back! Schedule your apt!!!

  12. You could totally pull it off but I'm going to say DON'T do it. You absolutely cannot be lazy with short hair. You will have to style it every single time! I think your hair is just at an in between stage and if you waited it out you would love it again. Also: You are still nursing right? I feel like those hormones are still affecting your hair and when you eventually stop things will get better.

Then again, do what makes you happy. It's just hair and it will grow (except for maybe those short pieces by your face..)

  13. DO IT!! You are thin enough to easily pull off a pixie cut... one of my good friends has one and its adorable!

  14. Just do it! You will look amazing, I know it!

  15. DO IT!!! I looove cute short hair cuts on women. And think about how easy doing your hair would be?!?! My facial features are too big to pull it off short hair :( . You could definitely get away with it though!

  16. I totally get it - I love having short, sassy hair. I'm going to chop mine off one day again, though I'm not sure when!

You're thin and adorable and you could definitely pull it off. The one thing, though, is that short hair can be a lot more high maintenance than longer hair. No option to put it back! So you might have to "do" it every day for it to look cute, ya know?

It's a big decision, but not *that* big since it does grow back out!! I think you'd look great with short hair!

  17. I feel weird commenting since we are like...exact opposites when it comes to hair ;) But here are my thoughts. If you want an "easier" hair style, don't do it. Too much maintenance. But if you are craving a change, then go for it. Whenever I get nervous about making a drastic change, I always think "eh, it's just hair...it will grow back."

You should play around with one of those virtual hairstyle websites again!

  18. I know nothing about hair or styling (obviously) but I think short hair would look good on you! You actually found a model who has very similar features and hair to you, so I think you'd look good with that cut. Also, really if you're just pulling it back with a headband every day, that basically looks like you have short hair anyway so what's the diff?! I do think shorter hair can be more high maintenance but also fun. I've never gone that short though, my nose is way too big for that :)

  19. I think you can very much pull off a pixie. You have the bone structure for it. Go for it!

  20. Do it! nothing screams 'mom hair' like a wet pony tail! Lol. That's the exact reason I chopped mine off. I was ALWAYS in a pony tail. I love it short! It's super easy to style and I feel more put together...if that makes sense! I can't wait to see your new do!!

  21. I have short hair for the exact reasons you have stated; I do nothing to it when it is longer. Therefore, even if it looks better longer, it really doesn't b/c I do nothing to it. That make sense? Anyway, I say go for it. You will look cute.

  22. I've been wanting to chop mine off too. I've finally got it to the middle of my back but keep seeing cute short hairstyles all over Pinterest!!

  23. I think you would rock short hair!

  24. I think you could totally pull off shorter hair! I'm a big fan of short hair cuts though. I cut my long hair a few years ago and never looked back. Although it does stink to get haircuts more often, it's also great to have a "style" vs. just wearing a ponytail or wearing it back all the time.
