The Shack Drama

So, who has read the book The Shack? If you haven't tackled this one yet I'm sure you've at least heard about it, right? Quite controversial and daring and a best-seller and.....interesting. I feel like this one needs it's own book review post even though I rarely do this [except for Twilight....that baby got at least two separate posts].

I'm a member of a book club with some co-workers and I realize this makes me both a total nerd and also really old. I'm okay with it because I love to read and really, what better way to discuss a book but with some appetizers and booze in the presence of friends? Last night we had the meeting at my place and aside from freaking out all day about how to arrange the food, which wine to serve, and whether or not Nate would clean up his CRAP from the living room before the girls arrived....it was a fabulous time. We read The Shack this month and I knew our discussion would be intense and enlightening. This book is 'theological fiction' which means that God and religion and faith all play a huge part in the plot. I guess it could be considered a 'Christian' book but then again some traditional conservative Christians are the book's biggest critics. They say the book is heresy, dangerous, and simply incorrect. I'll admit that the drama surrounding this book is one of the reasons I wanted to read it for myself, to form my own opinions. And now you have to read about them.

I'm not going to go too deep into the plot in case someone out there wants to read the book without me spoiling the fun. But here is the bottom line [that is all over the internet and even the back cover, so I'm not ruining anything]:

The main character, Mack, is totally ticked at God. His youngest daughter, Missy, gets abducted and brutally murdered at The Shack and even though I'm not a mom yet, I believe that would be every parent's worst nightmare. So then a few years later he gets this note in his mail box from God suggesting that they meet at The Shack. The fact that God sent him a note via the USPS isn't even the weirdest part.....just wait until Mack actually meets God face-to-face. All I'm going to say is that the Trinity is ethnically diverse, full of personality, and they love to eat home-cooked meals made by God the Father. You definitely have to remind yourself that this is FICTION and keep an open mind. But it forces you to think outside the box and has a few great take-home messages.

Forgiveness, for one, is a huge theme of this book. I know I've personally struggled with forgiveness in the past because it's just so easy to keep a grudge.  I also think us women tend to harbor negativity more easily than men. Come on ladies, you know we like to bottle up our feelings and let them accumulate until we explode. We hold onto past mistakes far too often and I honestly think it only hurts us. Sorry to generalize here, maybe it's just me but I think our gender tends to do this as a whole, too.

So one of my favorite quotes from the book about forgiveness:

"Forgiveness is first for you, the forgiver to release you from something that will eat you alive; that will destroy your joy and your ability to love fully and openly."

It's true, isn't it? When we hold onto past mistakes of our own or of others we only hurt ourselves. We're just denying ourselves happiness that exists in the present moment. Deep thought, huh?

Another interesting theme in the book is the famous question: "Why do bad things happen to good people?" I must say that I've been incredibly blessed in my life with amazing parents, a great childhood, an enjoyable career, and a wonderful husband. I really can't complain about too much in my life but when Keri was diagnosed, I really struggled with the whole 'Why, God?' question. It just didn't seem fair and my whole logical world turned upside down. I cried a lot and was angry and just didn't understand [and of course, my emotional experience was peanuts compared to Keri living through it....love you, Ker!].

The Shack doesn't directly answer the question as concisely as I had hoped. I definitely wanted a black and white answer as to WHY these things happen in life, like an epiphany of sorts saying, "Oh....that makes total sense now, I understand why crappy stuff happens." But really, it's not that simple. All the book says is that God does not want us to suffer and it's not his plan for bad things to happen. But he also doesn't intercede on our behalf every time we get in trouble, for reasons we just can't understand. We live in a sinful world but I'm still naive enough to think everything happens for a reason, even if we don't get it right away. I still don't know why Keri had to get cancer.....but I can definitely see some positive outcomes she's experienced through her journey. It's still a tough question, isn't it?

I could go on and on about the book but I won't. I will just say that I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on Good Reads and would suggest reading it just because it makes you think. I'm all for the mindless feel good books because easy reads make me happy. But sometimes the books that aren't so happy, ones that really work your brain a bit, are even better.

I know everyone has a different type of faith, a unique relationship with God and religion and churches. I myself have been exposed to numerous Christian denominations and am still trying to figure out where I fit in the best as I grow spiritually. But this book affirms the fact that you don't have to sit in a church pew to know God and heck, you might even find him in the craziest places imaginable.

And with that, I'm onto reading Eclipse. Nothing like switching from God to vampires with the turn of a page. :)

So three thousand and eight

Who else is loving the Boom Boom Pow song lately? Black Eyed Peas are the bomb. This will be a sort of miscellany post for you this fine Monday afternoon....but I really wanted to use the 3008 as a title because I *heart* it. I also *heart* being off on a Monday....don't get too jealous, since I had to work yesterday on Mother's Day. As the ONLY non-mother in my department I had to volunteer for that one and now my Monday is simply divine:) A long run, a long nap, a butt load of coffee, and catching up on everything I didn't do yesterday. Ah, a faux weekend day is just what I needed.

1. Not only am I obsessed with the BEP song but also, we bought the new Silversun Pickups album and holy crap, I love them. Last summer my ultra-hip brother-in-law introduced me to them and I put their song 'Three Seed" on repeat for about four months at a time. Then I heard their new single "Panic Switch" on the radio the other day and decided it was time to invest in their full album, Swoon. It rules, go and buy it right now [that's Swoon on the far right but aren't all of their albums gorge, too?]

They remind me of a mix between Smashing Pumpkins and maybe even a hint of Garbage, but with a sound uniquely their own. "Lazy Eye" from their Carnavas album is probably their most mainstream but honestly, the songs that aren't on the radio are even better.

Two other single song purchases to rave about: "Closer" by Kings of Leon and "Show Me What I'm Looking For" by Carolina Liar. Totally obsessed. Does anyone else get overly into new song purchases like me? Nate thinks I wear them out within a week from playing them too much but I guess that's just my intense nature:)

2. So apparently when I get birthday money, I cannot force myself to buy nice everyday items of clothing. I am in desparate need of Spring and Summer wardrobe staples like shorts, semi-casual tops, and of course I could use a new dress to wear to the multiple weddings we have this summer. But what do I spend my cash on instead? Running clothes, of course. It's become a sickness, really. I.just.can't.stop.

all
Remember this post from last summer? That is when I first became a believer of Dri-Fit material for running and I said goodbye to rotten cotton forever. But three measly outfits simply would not propel me forward into another summer of marathon training. A girl needs options and now I have them. Please observe:

Outfit #1: Those Nike running shorts everyone seems to have + hot pink Nike tank bought for me by my loving hubby, for my birthday. He knows me so well.

Outfit #2: tight capris bought for me by Nate at Christmas + another pink Nike tank bought with birthday cash. I love the little v-necks on both of these tanks. Tight capris always make me self-conscious about my thighs but they are oh-so-comfy.

Outfit #3: my new gray Nike running skort + 'long' blue Nike tank bought with Mom's birthday cash. LOVE. More on this one in a bit.
outfit3

Outfit #4: my old Nike running skort [not new but still a fave] + light purple PADDED tank from Eddie Bauer, of all places. Nate got me this one for Valentines day. Who knew EB had workout clothes? And a padded tank is just what the doctor ordered for nipping out, my friends. Totally comfy, too.

Okay, so I know skorts are quite controversial in some running circles. You all know my love affair with my original black Nike skort, right? Well, I was reading up on the newest version on the Nike site and there were all kinds of mixed reviews from buyers. I heard a lot of girls whine about how short this new one is, and how it gives you love handles, and it's way too tight. I figured, What the Heck? It can't be much shorter than the old one, can it? What do you think?
skorts
I ran 8.5 miles in it today and I will admit, it felt a little skimpy at first. And maybe a little tighter around my hips but there are shorts under there, you know, so it's not like you might flash hoo-ha on accident. It was very comfortable to run in and I will be keeping it for sure, but just in case I asked Nate if he thought it was an inappropriate length. I didn't want to look like a total prostitute running down the road but he assured me it wasn't as scandalous as I thought. I think he just likes how my butt looks in it, so his opinion is biased:)

3. While drinking heavily at Kristen's wedding we discovered a new favorite beer. Imagine our delight when we found it at a local grocery store, too! Mmmmm, it's so amazing.
our new favorite beer EVER

4. I am not joking when I say that Milwaukee JUST accepted the fact that May is halfway over. About two weeks ago, everything started greening up around here and actual flower blossoms came out to play. About freaking time, don't you think? Only about 2 months behind St. Louis, of course. I used to assume that June meant Summer but right now I'm settling for Spring. Did I ever mention that it's been a long winter? My favorite trees shed a lot but are so pretty:
favorite tree sheds a lot

true sign of spring

Tulips! Actual tulips!
spring has sprung....even in Milwaukee!

hello, color

Trees with real, living leaves on them!
the tree that glows in the sun

even plain green leaves make me happy

So many photographic opportunities, so little time.
bokeh beauty

i thought this was a daffodil?
So yeah, I just switched out all of my winter coats, hats/gloves, and sweaters to my Spring/Summer wardrobe. It's always a little disheartening to find that your wardrobe blows, don't you think?

5. Nate is taking one of his last finals right now. One more on Wednesday and then he's off until 5/26. I cannot believe he has three whole semesters under his belt. Only six more to go, people. One year down, two more left. However you want to look at it......time is flying by and Nate is kicking major PT booty. So proud of my little student. Can't wait for him to have free time in the evenings again. And let's not forget about our anniversary trip to Chicago....holla!

Follicular drama

Well, the end is near my friends--so say hello to Armageddon. It's happened. I cannot believe this day has come.

I found my first gray hair. [sob] And, needless to say, I'm struggling to accept my fate as a true geriatric. I mean, I knew the jump from 27 to 28 felt ginormous but throw me a bone, here. I am NOT handling this well.

The incident occurred the other night as I was brushing my teeth before bed. It went a little like this: "Ho, hum, another day has come to an end. Life is good. Fa la la la. I cannot wait to fall into a blissful slumber while contemplating the many possibilities for the future........hold up, what the......OMG!!!!!! NATE!!!!!! WHAT IS THIS?!?!"

Yes, that many exclamation points were shrieked with words created from all caps. It was true panic, my friends. I'm pretty sure Nate thought I found a mutant rat scurrying across the floor or something, considering my terror-stricken tone. But oh, no. It was much worse.

Shining like a frickin beacon of light was a colorless strand of hair sticking straight out of my part. It was about three inches long and very course....even frizzier than my normal deviant hair follicles. Yes, this in particular strand was basically the devil reincarnated as it laughed in my face: "You silly girl. You thought your youth would last forever? Mwah ha ha. You are rapidly morphing into a little old lady with gray hair, which means dentures, saggy papery skin, Depends, eating a 4 o'clock dinner at Dennys, and high-waisted elastic pants will soon follow. Would you like your power scooter now or later? Enjoy the progression, my dear."

Of course I immediately started ripping at the bastard hair, cursing and staring in disbelief. But the hair would not let go of my scalp. So I brought out my secret weapon: my pink Tweezerman tweezers. Take that, bia. You are dead to me.

Upon closer inspection, I tried to convince myself that this might just be a bleached out version of my naturally brunette locks. Perhaps the sun shines down on this particular spot of hair and makes it lighten up....to the extreme? Or maybe the last time I got highlights [ahem, two years ago] somehow affected the innermost root of this hair and washed away every bit of pigment? Have I been overly stressed and not even noticed it? The hair couldn't be GRAY, could it?

To which Nate replied, "Nope....that's definitely a gray hair. In fact, it's basically white." You can imagine the look he got from his loving wife, can't you dear readers? "I really have no sympathy for you," he says to me. Then he points his finger towards his own tresses as if to state the obvious. He's endured his own hair-related struggles in his twenties and I never quite understood his heartache. Of course, I think he's an extremely attractive bald man....what with his perfectly shaped head and everything. He pulls it off well and managed to remain hawt despite being follicularly challenged. Bruce Willis ain't got nothing on my hubs [but I'm biased, of course].

But me? With a full head of gray hair? ICK. I could never make that look glamorous. And I'd never be able to stomach the monthly bills from a hairdresser if I was forced to color my hair all of the time. I'm low maintenance! I don't cut my hair for at least 8-10 weeks at a time because I'm too tight with my money! I will not be able to handle consistent coloring....you know how much that costs, right? [insert tremoring here]

As predicted, I spent the rest of the night moping around the house and trying to come to terms with this milestone in life. And I just couldn't help but wonder.....if my hair is already throwing in the towel, are my ovaries shriveling up and shutting down, too? But I need those puppies someday!

Of course, I know lots of people have random grays and their lives don't stop instantaneously. I'm sure some readers out there have experienced this type of crisis* and lived to tell the tale. And I bet you are going to tell me to sack up and pay for some highlights to conceal the inevitable demise. And I will tell you that I will sit in that overpriced salon with a grimace on my bitter face. Shortly after you'll probably hear me complain about teenagers these days, and how I used to walk 5 miles to school each day.....up hill.....in 3 feet of snow......

I'm so becoming a bitter old hag, aren't I? I blame this climate, for sure. There's always Wisconsin to blame.

*you know that I'm being overly dramatic on purpose here, right? I don't actually consider this a major life crisis or anything. I know I'm lucky to have hair, and to have only found one gray....so far. This is just one of those slightly embellished stories I felt fit into the blogosphere quite nicely. I do have some sense of reality in this aging brain of mine, no worries. Life is so much more interesting with added drama, don't you think? :)
