12 + 13 weeks | Baby #4 (Hidden Baby Chronicles)

12/30/16 | 12w6d

I never made time to post about week 12 and now I'll be 13 weeks tomorrow, so here goes my first combo post.

On Christmas Day, I was 12w1d and we finally told the kids our news. It was something we had been so excited to tell them and it seemed like they might already know, since we've definitely talked about the pregnancy around them PLENTY of times. Predictions: Truman would be seriously pumped, Cecelia would take some time to warm up to the idea, and Porter would be clueless. Ah, foreshadowing.

We opened gifts with our family of five on Christmas morning and spent a few hours putting together train tables, eating breakfast, and organizing new toys. Before I hopped in the shower, I asked Nate if we should do it and he said, 'Yep.'

I had been thinking of a fun way to tell them for weeks. I bought a sixth (!!) stocking a few weeks prior and put it in a Christmas bag. I wrote a little note from our Elf on the Shelf, Candy Cane Jane, and acted like I just saw it all of a sudden. 'Hey, Truman, what is this note?' I asked him.

All Photos-211

He took over from there, reading the note out loud to his siblings. CCJ had him look on the desk for the next clue, where the stocking was waiting along with another note. Truman thought the stocking was for Henry, and kept reading the clue. When the elf mentioned that the big surprise would happen in July, Truman thought it was the elf's birthday. I was shocked that he hadn't already figured this out!

The elf had them sit on the couch so mom and dad could tell them the news, and Nate shot a video. Their reactions were seriously CLASSIC. You can watch the video, but Truman was jumping up and down, Cecelia just stared at me, and Porter kept saying, 'no' and hit me.

Cecelia eventually warmed up to the idea after she said she just didn't want 'it' to mess with her Shopkins. Then she said she wants it to be a girl and wants to name her 'Julie.' HA! Porter eventually chilled out and told a random neighbor, 'I'm going to be a brother!' later in the day. So apparently he kind of gets it. Truman has just been so stinking excited from the second he found out. He wanted to know if the grandparents already knew because he wanted to announce it to the world. The second thing he said was, 'I can't wait to tell my teacher!' He keeps saying that he can't wait for the baby to come, and he also wants a sister. In fact, he wants to name her Rose and is pretty adamant that this will be a girl. I think all of them will be just fine either way, but it's kind of cute that they want it to be a girl (and also, because I feel like it's a little lady, too).

Other tasks Truman has decided that he will manage as a big brother times three: he wants to read to her each night, get her dressed (!), give her a bottle, give her a pacifier, and sing her lullabies. I mean, seriously. He also nominated Cecelia to paint the baby's fingernails and told Porter that his job will be getting wipes and a new diaper for the baby. Porter is all over that one.

The kids will be 7, 5, and maybe 3 on the nose when this baby is born. It's going to be a wild ride and we are so excited!!!

Other happenings: I have not taken a nap all week which is major progress. I can eat without wanting to puke. I've been finding the heartbeat pretty easily a few times a week and the HR is now in the 160s. It's still the best sound in the entire world. Oh, and I'm for real showing. No seriously. I had to unbutton my pants when I was sitting at a hockey game for a few hours, I just couldn't handle the wait of my jeans anymore. My boobs are bigger and I'm sure I've gained a few pounds. The scale at Urgent Care said I was up four pounds but I did have my gigantic winter boots and huge sweater on, so I'm not counting that just yet. I've just started to miss running and alcohol but not THAT much. New Years Eve tomorrow night would be nice with a glass of wine but I'll survive, I suppose;)

We welcomed several visitors to our house this week for the holidays: my mom and dad, my brother, Jon and Brittany all came this week and they are leaving tomorrow. We let Truman tell my brother, who was the only one of the bunch that didn't know yet. He was shocked and excited, which seems to be par for the course right now!

I've been pretty tired this whole week but not tired enough to nap. I haven't slept the greatest at night either, mostly because of my darling Porter boy. He was awake from 2-4am last and so was I. I know I'll crash hard tonight but I don't want to waste time napping---a very good sign that the first trimester yuckiness is fading away.

We took our family pictures earlier this week, when I was technically 12w4d. The photographer just sent me some of our balloon pics and I can't quite pull the trigger on posting them yet! I had it in my head that I'd announce to social media next week, after I pass 13 weeks so I think I'll stick to that plan for now. I did just send a few messages to closer friends that should probably not find out on Facebook and Instagram.

This all seems so REAL all of a sudden. I have my first appointment in about 11 days and am really excited to see my old OB again. One of my friends just did the genetic testing for the first trimester, and all is well--no abnormalities. It does make me wish I would have done that test, too, just for the peace of mind. But I'm trying to stay positive and believe that this baby is going to be exactly who he or she is meant to be in our family.

I feel like there were more updates I wanted to share and now I can't remember. I just really cannot believe I'm having a fourth baby. It's starting to sink in and it's both CRAZY and feels completely right. Perhaps the next weekly update I do will be in real time on the blog. NUTS!

(Did I even take a weekly picture? I don't think I did. What am I going to do for weekly photos though, the old selfie in mirror seems so boring).

Super late with this (hidden) post, but it's the week before Christmas and life is NUTS. I doubt next week will be much better and alas, I refuse to let this baby be undocumented. We will see if this inspiration continues through pregnancy and beyond, or if I just wave the white flag over consistent posts for baby. Poor fourth kid.

Things that happened this week: I got sicker than I have been in years. Last Thursday I woke up and seriously could barely stand up, couldn't shower, and wanted to puke. Also my throat hurt so badly I couldn't swallow. I eventually figured out that I was not going to work that day, and went to Urgent Care instead. Strep throat, positive rapid test. The rest of that day was seriously the worst and I was pretty anxious that the baby was going to shrivel up inside of me because I ate two popsicles and maybe one glass of water got down the hatch that day. Really, really rough.

Within three days I was back to normal, with Amoxicillin on board. I wanted to take Ibuprofen more than anything in this world for some relief with fever/aches but could not. At least I could get the meds! Then Lois tested positive, then I took Cecelia and Porter in since both seemed to have a cold and they were BOTH positive. The next day Nate woke up and wanted to die, and got his positive test that day. Holy strep bug, Batman. Very glad this wasn't all happening on Christmas Day itself or anything. Still, not great timing.

I used my Doppler a lot this week, mostly because I was feeling so horrible and wanted some assurance that baby was doing okay. The heartbeat is still fairly easy to find, but one day I felt like it was down from the usual 180s into the 160s and that bothered me a lot. Now it's usually at 160-170 and perhaps baby is just getting big enough that the heart isn't pumping quite as crazy-fast? Trying not to be psychotic;)

Also, I told my boss I'm pregnant before my second interview at work. I was feeling very guilty and wanted to be upfront and honest with her. She was excited for me and says it won't affect my potential for this job. Sure, she has to say that but I shared with her several other concerns about this promotion and was very honest with my thoughts. Plus I don't want to keep it a secret from the world much longer, so once we tell the kids on Christmas the word can be out without saying 'but the kids don't know yet, so shhhhhh'. Yay! Coming right up, and I'm thinking of ways to tell them (scavenger hunt for clues?). Also we will have pro pictures done next week when all of our family are here, so might as well do some sort of reveal photos. Time will tell what we come up with, certainly feels like all of the options have been exhausted at this point!

For symptoms: I'm still really freaking tired but I think that might be more recovering from Strep than anything. If I nap, then I can't fall asleep at 9pm anymore, so maybe my napping days need to be done. I'm not as nauseous this week but every now and then food looks or smells disgusting. I'm just happy to be eating something other than popsicles and drinking water again! Still peeing more than usual, boobs are tender and seemingly more full, and I'm extra moody. YAY.

The nurse at Urgent Care was the first to be like, ''Oh, was this 'an oops baby'?'' and it made me feel a little rage-y. I hate the term 'oops baby' because we are adults and know how babies are made. But yes, it was a surprise, not that it's any of her business (the blog and telling the entire public internet is different to me, but the nurse asking me about it was annoying---makes sense, right?). I think she was shocked when she saw I was on the pill earlier this year, and now obviously NOT, but when she asked how old my youngest is she chilled out. I mean, Porter is just two, will be three when baby is born. It's not like it's a ten year gap or something! I hope she wasn't inching towards calling me 'old' but I was probably being oversensitive and very, very sick with little patience for anything, including sitting upright. Anyway, will be interesting to hear everyone's opinion on this baby! Makes me more protective about this little one, like, 'Hey, we might not have planned for it but it's going to be amazing, no need to be shocked.'

Current mood: tired, bloated, hungry, head-spinning with Christmas To-Do lists, and excited to tell the kids. My prediction is that Truman is excited but not super verbal about it, Cecelia takes awhile to warm up to it but then she is pumped, and Porter is freaking clueless. Lord, don't let Porter and this baby share a birthday---he will never approve!

10 weeks | Baby #4 (Hidden Baby Chronicles)

12/11/16 | 10w1d

I guess I should start doing 'real' weekly updates now?

Big things from this past week: at 9w3d I pulled the Doppler from the attic, and within about 5 minutes of trying I heard the beautiful sound of baby's heartbeat. It was a quick 178 bpm, loud and strong, and provided me with lots of relief that I didn't know I needed. I think the time from seeing a heartbeat on the ultrasound until I can feel movement is a little strange/hard to stay positive. I mean, I am feeling pregnant and looking it, too. But until I can feel this baby move (usually around 14 weeks) it is easy to wonder what is going on in there. So anyway, doppler for the win, yet again.

Also, I think my bump is getting out of control. I mean, comparing my midsection to what it looked like just six weeks ago is sort of startling. I realize it will also be startling to think *this* was a 'bump' when I'm sporting a 40 week bump. But still! I'm starting to wonder if I can actually keep this a secret from the kids and work and many of our friends until 12 weeks or beyond. This uterus is like, 'OH YEAH, I KNOW WHAT TO DO, SIT BACK AND WATCH.' It talks to me like that, I swear.

All Photos-122

A few days ago, we had our annual neighborhood Christmas crawl, where we go house to house and party. I didn't even bother to fake drink and made a questionable decision to wear a semi-fitted sweater dress instead of something super flowy. My father-in-law walked into our house, ready to watch the kids that night, and said, 'WOAH, you are really showing now!' So that's great. I still didn't change my clothes because I was having a wardrobe crisis and actually felt somewhat cute in the dress. Then at the party, one guy asked Nate if I was pregnant (and he said yes), and one girl straight up asked me and I LIED and said 'no!'. I'm not sure why I lied, but I don't know her that well and didn't feel like dealing. I'm positive a lot of our closer friends suspect because I was drinking water and apparently because of my obvious bump. A lot of our friends and neighbors already know, but several do not---I'm sure they won't be that surprised when word finally spreads.

I've been feeling a little better this week. I will have a great day when I don't even need a nap and don't want to vom at the thought of a vegetable. But the next day will be more of the same nasty stuff when I can't help but pass out midday for 2 hours, I feel sick basically constantly, and food makes me want to hurl but I'm starving. At least that isn't every single day anymore? Oh, and another thing worth mentioning: my boobs are officially getting bigger. Yessssssss, one big positive about pregnancy is that I get to pretend I'm not an A-cup underneath the weight gain and milk production!

I don't know how much I'll go into it on the blog, but tomorrow I'm going in for an interview at my job to be considered for a promotion. I'm not too nervous, mostly excited, and interested to see where this goes. I don't plan on telling them that I'm pregnant until after the interviews and what not, which I hope isn't deceitful....but I don't want it to make a difference in their or my decision. However, I'm realizing that if things aren't settled in the job front by 12 weeks, that will put a damper on my idea to tell the kids and maybe the internet. Because I definitely don't want my job finding out through the grapevine that I'll be going on maternity leave for 3 months next year. I assume that I'll be coming back to work after baby but who knows, it all depends on Nate's small business venture and how well he's doing....and whether or not we start with the house addition before or during my maternity leave. So yeah, a LOT of big things happening in 2017 for us. Nate's job, possibly mine, a new baby, a house addition. It's completely insane to me when I think that really none of these things, except for Nate's job change, were even on the agenda two months ago. This baby is going to be a catalyst for change in our family, and we couldn't be more excited/ready to get the show on the road!

Earlier this week, I was talking to a friend who knows I'm pregnant and said something about having four kids. Right then and there it hit me like a ton of bricks, maybe for the first time since October when we found out I'm expecting. Four kids. I can type it all I want, and say it to myself or to Nate, but I know it hasn't really hit me yet. That day with my friend, it hit me and kind of made my head spin.

We are going to have four children. There's someone else growing in my belly, someone that is going to complete our family, make Porter a big brother (laughable), provide many more stories and laughter and personality in this family. I've said it before and I'll say it again: we are so stinking blessed it's almost hard to accept.

Double digits, baby!

Relief, Part 2

I had my follow up ultrasound last week and it was another huge sigh of relief.

I didn't feel as nervous going into this one as I did the first one, because I haven't bled or spotted and I've been feeling really freaking first trimester-y (sick). But also, I'm focusing on positive thinking about this baby, because THIS IS REALLY HAPPENING.

Nate was able to come with me again to this scan, which was a nice surprise. We had the same ultrasound tech and this time she didn't even have to do the vaginal part of the test, just abdominal (thank you, Lord). I also had to pee like a racehorse again but not nearly as brutal as the first go around.

She kept the screen tilted away from us but if I strained my eyes hard enough, I could still see what was going on. I saw the baby but couldn't see a heartbeat, and then I started to panic. The babe definitely looked bigger to me but shouldn't that heartbeat be really easy to see? I glanced over at Nate one time with a nervous grin and he looked calm, which helped me remember to breathe. She took a bunch of measurements before saying a single word, then finally, about 15 minutes later, she turned the screen towards us.

'So there is baby, much bigger this time. Heartbeat is 168, measuring appropriately for this age. And here is that blood, it's still there but maybe a little smaller. I don't know, I don't have the old measurements in front of me.'

(BREATHE. Breathe, Julia).

And then we saw this little gummy bear kick it's leg out and wiggle it's fat stomach a bit. Seriously. At just 8w5d, this baby was noticeably moving in there!

'Um, did the baby just move,' I asked? I didn't feel it but I saw it.

'Yes, it's moving a little, you're right.'

I am telling you one thing for certain: seeing that little blob on the screen move and have an actual beating heart? It never, ever gets old. This is our baby. This is our fourth child, just growing and existing and doing what it's supposed to do in there. We didn't plan for this and couldn't have imagined a life that included four kids and yet, this is our story. I believe it wasn't our plan, but it was for sure God's plan. Like my friend said, even before Nate and I walked down the aisle as husband and wife, God knew our story included four kids. There's a baby in there under the bloat, people. A baby.

8w5d

We left the office and hugged a little, before going our separate ways. I called Mom with the update and then Memaw, telling her the news for the first time. It never gets old telling her the news of another great-grandchild, and she was just as shocked as the other three times I've told her.

I still haven't heard from the OB office about the official results of the ultrasound, which is odd since last time they called within an hour to tell me about the bleed. I have my first office appointment in another week and then I've decided to carry my own health insurance next year (again), so that I can return to my beloved OB who oversaw my other pregnancies. She's worth the added cost, both Nate and I have agreed on this.

My doppler has been pulled from the attic, I'm glad I didn't sell it yet! I haven't tried it though, since I just had the good ultrasound and am not feeling too panicky at this moment. I think I'll be able to find it when I do try though, maybe I should stick to once per week to maintain some sanity.

I really feel pretty awful, but I'm trying to talk myself through it. I feel queasy in the morning, hungry but nothing sounds good. I'm fine while eating but afterwards is iffy. I only want salt and cheese, preferably melted cheese on some sort of carb. All carbs sound pretty good, not sugary ones but salty ones. My ideal meal is currently a bagel and cream cheese. I haven't had a bagel in...I don't know how long, but my friend dropped some off for me and they hit the spot. All vegetables are dry heave-inducing but I'm trying to consume a few anyway. I still choke down some coffee in the morning but not even a full cup. I'm not running at all and honestly don't miss it because the thought makes me want to puke. I also don't even care that I can't have a beer or wine, because those also sound disgusting. I mean, who am I right now?? No running, alcohol, coffee....I'm a changed woman, apparently!

As we head into full-swing Christmas season, I can't help but feel a strange sense of calm in the midst of pure chaos. Another baby. Wow.

Relief, Part 1

November 19, 2016: 7w0d

I had my first ultrasound this week and (drum roll, please) we saw a HEARTBEAT!

November 17th: Hi, baby!!!! You are 6w5d right now.

6w5d

We also saw a gigantic, massive bleed that looked nearly identical to Cecelia's sub-chorionic hemorrhage back in 2011. The ultrasound tech barely said a word to us during the entire test (maddening) and then the nurse called later that day to say, 'Baby is growing nicely but there is blood in front of the placenta.' I'm guessing that is the same thing as a SCH? They ordered another ultrasound in two weeks to see if the bleed is resolving and I'm supposed to remain on pelvic rest.

If I hadn't seen something this horrifying with Cecelia, and didn't know that it could turn out totally 100% fine, I'd probably be freaking out. I mean, I still feel a little uneasy about bleeding so much and then seeing a bleed that completely dwarfs our baby. But after spending the last 1.5 weeks in total mental limbo, I'm ready to embrace the positive. I'm trying to remind myself of this often, because what is the point of being sad and worried all of the time? It's pointless, and I should know by now that it's all out of my control anyway.

Baby had a heartbeat of 126 bpm which is normal for this age. It measured spot-on at 6w5d which is identical to my measurement using my last menstrual period. I tell you what: seeing that tiny gummy bear BABY with a heartbeat never, ever gets old. It's the most amazing thing ever and my stomach rises into my throat just thinking about that moment.

I cannot believe we get to do this again. Cannot. Believe.

Nate was with me and he was positive going into it, and positive coming out of it. We went out to lunch wear I forced myself to eat and not puke, then met with a contractor and an architect about building an addition on our house. More on this later, my head is still spinning from everything right now.

All Photos-2646

Symptoms of note:
-Bloated like woah, nearly a real bump which seems impossible
-gassy in the evenings, disgustingness.
-highly emotional---I've cried over the strangest things this week and feel on the verge of tears 50% of the time. One morning I started to cry when Porter and Cecelia both cried for various reasons. I felt like such a failure of a mother and that the world was ending. I mean, come on! Someone is always crying at our house, but why does it have to be me now?
-Nauseous. Food sounds disgusting but I'm starving. Waves of wanting to puke mostly in the first half of the day.
-Hypersensitive sniffer. I think Henry's dog farts almost pushed me over the edge today.
-Peeing non-stop. I even have to wake up before 6 am to pee which is highly unusual for me.
-EXHAUSTED. I'm taking naps most days which is also not my norm. I wake up still tired and crash at 9pm at night. The Fatigue is usually my biggest symptom of the first trimester and oh, what a beast it is for productivity in life.
-Boobs super tender. Not any bigger yet, unfortch.
-Short of breath climbing stairs. I mean, really?
-Dizziness when I stand up.
-Headaches.

That's quite the list!

I'm also not running anymore, officially. I haven't run since I bled on election day and I'm missing a 10k race that we are both signed up to run tomorrow. Honestly, I miss running and was really getting into a groove of running fast and running often. But I also feel so tired and nauseated that I don't care. The doctor didn't tell me I can't run but I'm using my logic and saying that my body probably cannot handle running if I bled pretty badly after my last run. So I'm tapping out from the race and probably until the second trimester, or beyond.

I also don't even miss alcohol yet. It sounds disgusting like all food and drink. I can barely drink a whole cup of coffee anymore. WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THIS WORLD??

The only thing that sounded really amazing this week was hard salami and cheese on crackers. Is that the most random craving ever? We have never purchased hard salami at the store, ever. I almost bought some but that morning I felt like I would vom if I had to stand by the deli meats any longer, so I skipped it. But now that I'm writing about it, I totally want some salami asap.

Emotional Rollercoaster

November 12, 2016: 6w0d pregnant with baby number four

All Photos-2617

All Photos-2608

Well, this week has been rather INSANE.

Last weekend everything was fine. I hit the five week mark and started feeling some classic pregnancy symptoms with sore boobs, mega-waves of nausea, intense fatigue that cannot be ignored, Grade A bloating in the belly region, food and especially coffee tasting like dirt...the usual.

Then came election day, which was 5w3d of my pregnancy. On Tuesday, November 11th I went for a run with two of my girlfriends at 6:30 am. I was hoping to tell one of them about the pregnancy during the run, but didn't want to tell both of them when they both showed up, so I just pushed off the announcement to her for awhile longer. I didn't feel great that morning, and right when I woke up I swore I felt crampy. I am also known to be a head case during pregnancy so I wrote it off. I ran slowly and walked home instead of jogging after our three miles. The kids were awake when I returned home and they were off school this day, so we were leisurely getting ready as Nate prepared for work.

I took a shower, got dressed, and was texting my mom as I did my hair. All of a sudden I felt it: something coming out of me. This is not the first time I've peeked into my underwear with a sense of dread. But this time I saw bright red blood and my heart dropped.

I went to the bathroom and realized there was a lot of blood. Think 'starting your period' type of fun. I put on a pad and went upstairs to tell Nate, simply, 'I'm bleeding.' He was confused and said, 'Are you okay?' I didn't know how to answer that but immediately felt like the show must go on. Flashbacks to my miscarriage in 2011 and then my scary bleeding episode with Cecelia's pregnancy hit hard, but I did my best to remain level-headed.

Nate left for work and gave me a big hug. The children were ready to start this day and so we rushed out of the door for our first of several planned activities. Porter's art class came and went, I took the kids with me to vote, and then we drove to Cecelia's gymnastics class. This entire time I was sort of numb and I'm sure my face was completely blank. Angry, on the verge of tears, hopeful, confused.

I texted my mom and told her it was going to be okay. I texted my friend Erin since she was the only other person who knew I was pregnant (besides Nate's parents). I ended up telling two more friends this day because I felt a strong need for a support system, and let me tell you---announcing 'I'm pregnant, but bleeding and probably miscarrying,' is the WORST.

Eventually when we were all back home and Porter was napping, I called the (new) OB office. The nurse said they wanted to draw my HcG levels today and again in 48 hours. I was still bleeding bright red. I was cramping. I was certain this was the beginning of the end.

Tony stopped by around 1pm this day for something else and I ended up telling him the news. We had just told our parents a few days earlier and informing my father-in-law that I was bleeding was pretty awful. But I needed him to sit with the kids during my blood draw and of course he was completely supportive.

I got the blood draw. Nate came home for dinner. I cried at the dinner table when the kids were in the other room. 'No, I'm not okay with this. I mean, I will be okay, but this just sucks.' I pulled it together and plugged on through the evening.

Wednesday I had a super busy day at work. I was no longer bleeding, somehow, but spotted brown most of the day. I was so thankful that I didn't spring a leak while working with a patient and work served as a nice distraction. I told two more friends the news this day---again sticking with the mixed bag of emotions. 'I'm pregnant, BUT...' The OB office called this day with my results from the day prior. My HcG was in the normal range for five weeks at 7195. I looked it up and that was actually on the high end of normal. I felt relief, because I wasn't cramping, wasn't bleeding, and maybe this was another SCH like I had with Cecelia.

Thursday, at 5w5d I had another blood draw after a morning of work. Still not bleeding, still feeling mostly positive and downright nauseated all day long. I was hoping for the results that night but no luck. More waiting.

I got the call on Friday, while at the library with Porter. My numbers did rise from 7,195 to 10,215. The nurse gave some bland instructions about being aware of any severe bleeding or cramping, and we would just stick to the ultrasound that was already scheduled for next week to learn more. 'Isn't it bad that the numbers didn't double,' I asked?

'That's great if they do double, but yours went up by a third and that is the minimal amount we like to see,' she informed me.

Positivity lost out in my head for the rest of the day. I did (too much) research online to learn more about HcG draws. Some sites had wonderful success stories about girls who had non-doubling numbers. Some sites had miscarriage stories tied to those same ambiguous numbers. Some sites gave me hope, saying after 6,000 the HcG might not double in 48 hours anyway. They said it can take 3-3.5 days at that point, which was comforting. But making too much of HcG is kind of ridiculous and it was driving me insane. I had to step away from the internet and came to the conclusion that some things never change, and asking Google to tell me the future of this pregnancy wasn't a smart move.

And so here I am today, writing this at 6 weeks pregnant. Still not bleeding, not even really spotting anymore. My boobs hurt and I almost puked twice this morning already. Every twinge feels like it's the start of something bad. I'm worried about a miscarriage, worried about something being wrong with this baby, worried that my body won't be able to figure it out and I'll need surgery again. I'm just worried, guys. Rightfully so.

I'm also trying my hardest to stay positive and hopeful. Remembering to pray, remembering that this is out of my control, remembering that we will handle whatever comes our way.....it's not easy, even as a seasoned pro at early pregnancy. I'm trying not to think about it at all which is a joke.

Five more days until the ultrasound. I am hopeful that we will have a solid answer either way. I am nervous and dreading it, but I'm a pinch excited. I have no idea how this story will end and feel like we used up our miracle on Cecelia's pregnancy. At least we will see a heartbeat or not, and can tell if the baby is in the right place (sort of worried about an ectopic pregnancy because I like to diagnose myself).

So that's why this past week has been an insane asylum (in my head). What a freaking roller coaster of emotions! I forgot how cathartic it can be to type it all out on the old blog, though. Off to 'just do the next thing' which doesn't include freaking out non-stop. I hope.

The negatives

Perhaps listing all of my worries about this pregnancy will make it easier to handle the swirl of thoughts in my brain.

I am 35 and will be 36 when this baby is born. I am SEVEN years older than I was during my first pregnancy. Advanced Maternal Age means more possible testing during pregnancy (which I find fascinating), and a higher risk of a baby born with deficits. I know we would love this baby even if he/she is faced with medical issues, but oh---it would be such a different life than we are living now. It would be hard on our kids and just everyone, but we could pull together and handle it that was our destiny.

What if I miscarry? It could surely happen again and I think my loss back in 2011 weighs more heavily on my heart than I realize. This goes along with the first worry, because I keep thinking we are 'too blessed.' Which is ridiculous, but still---early pregnancy brings out the worst in my negative thoughts.

Medical insurance: the kids and I switched to Nate's plan for all of 2016. His open enrollment just closed three days before I got my positive test, which means we are on his plan again for 2017. And therefore, I am not with my beloved OB that I've had for the other kids. A different hospital for delivery, which also happens to be the one where I had my miscarriage. The new doctor I'm with seemed nice enough for a quick annual appointment earlier this year, but nobody can compare to my previous OB. We are working on a plan to get me back on my own insurance plan through my job, which is possible because my open enrollment isn't for another few weeks. I really hope this works out okay!

House: well, we only have three bedrooms and will have SIX people living in them. Totally possible to make it work, but I cannot imagine having Porter share a bedroom with a newborn. We've talked about a huge addition to our house for years....perhaps this means it's coming sooner than we thought? I doubt we will move from this house and I think we can just make the bedroom sitch work for awhile. I'm envisioning a trundle bed for Porter with the big kids in their existing room. Lord help us all.

In that same vein, MONEY. Kids cost money, with medical bills and deductibles and maybe a giant home addition. And college. And food. And all of that. Nate is currently making a big move in his career, moving towards owning is own practice. Which is AWESOME and what he wants to do, and has so much potential to be successful that we can smell it. But it's also a scary time since he's decreasing his hours at his current job to make room for the potential of this other path. How in the hell am I going to work with four kids? I mean, I CAN, but the logistics are nuts. We can't expect Nate's dad to watch a newborn plus Porter, plus the bigger kids when they are off school for the summers.

Hurting others: so many people want one child, or a second child. So many have been struggling to get pregnant and now here we are with a surprise fourth kid? I kind of hate us FOR those people. I know my brother and sister-in-law are going to try for a baby soon and I totally feel guilty for stealing their thunder a bit. Another friend of mine has been struggling for a second child and I dread telling her this news so much. Blog reading seems to be on a major decline, but I'm sure there are still plenty out there who will hate me for this announcement. Although I shouldn't care what other people think about us, I'm trying to prepare for some nasty comments about our reproductive habits and choices. Gross.

Twins. Enough said.

No more working on my fitness: meaning, running hard and fast probably cannot happen during pregnancy. I was really starting to get my mind and body back after three kids, and my favorite stress reliever is currently running. I run often and I run faster than I've ever run before. As much as I would like to continue running for the next nine months, it's not going to be the same and pushing my body in pregnancy scares me too much.

And finally, am I really mom enough for FOUR kids? Do I have it in me to be patient and loving and....available for four needs at once? Can I do it? Am I cut out for four tiny human beings depending on me? I better be, huh?

Man, the first trimester really brings out the worst in my mental state. It's hard to stay positive and I don't want to sound whiney about all of my worries. I'm an adult and know how babies are made, so I can't complain too much. It's just a little scary, and I guess it has been scary every.single.time before this.

So yeah, all of these worries are the predominant thoughts in my head today. The excitement is there too, and the shock is slowly wearing off but not gone just yet. I have known I'm pregnant for five days and it's amazing how many extreme emotions I've already felt. I'll write about how I found out and all of those details another day. Today is all about the worries I need to wash away with frantic typing.

I just re-read some of my older pregnancy posts and remembered: today I am pregnant and I love my baby. And also, 'just do the next thing.' Word, Julia of yesteryear. Word.

Everything New is Fine

October 28, 2016: 'Everything new is fine.'

This phrase, with an image of a new plant sprouting from the ground just randomly appeared in front of me. I opened up the baby monitor app on my phone, then before the camera view appeared, a seemingly unrelated quote popped up for about ten seconds. I have no idea where this came from but it stopped me in my tracks. I nervously chuckled and then promptly teared up, resting my forehead on the doorframe.

Everything new is FINE.

This morning I took a positive pregnancy test. My emotions are reeling, my head is spinning and I can't think straight. I could list a million and five thoughts that went through my head since 8am when I took that test. But instead, I'm choosing to simply hold onto the thought that everything new is fine.

I still have to tell Nate the news. We have so many thoughts to work through together. This is freaking insane. Four kids? It feels like I'm dreaming right now, the most surreal moment of my life. If I get a chance to sort through my thoughts I'm sure I'll be back here, typing away.

Until then: it's fine. FINE. Something new. A new baby. Four.

Baby #3: 12 weeks

Twelve Weeks: 12.24.13

Untitled

Photo thoughts: Hate that the picture is taken at night, that I'm wearing an eight year old wife beater, and that it's off centered. Love the two adorable kiddos in the background, so it will do. Also: hi, bump!

Here, this is a little better but I switched the two cute kids for one cute dog. Christmas Eve!
Untitled

Oh, and here was 11 weeks. Much better in the daytime light, must remember to take belly pics during the day.
Untitled

Size of baby: An adorable lime baby.

Cravings/Aversions: Sweets are tasting mighty fine again. Uh-oh. I've still been consuming mass quantities of salt and cheese, plus pickles were a particular favorite of the week. So stereotypical, I know. Still can't do coffee--not decaf, not the real stuff---but I really *want* to like it again. Hot tea is fine for now but if I get a killer headache, only Diet Dr. Pepper will fix it. I remember having one diet soda daily with CC and could totally see this becoming a habit this time around, too. The carbonation is just awesome right now. Also, haven't had McDonalds in forever (like, maybe a year?) and we had it twice in the past two weeks. So.Freaking.Good. I cannot even handle the amazingness of the french fries and a double cheeseburger. First true craving, for sure, and I think Nate was secretly into it when I said we HAD to get Mickey Dees ASAP.

What I'm loving: Being out to the whole wide world! Pretty fun to spill the (baby) beans on the internet and to feel comfortable telling anyone else we see in real life, too. Anything can happen at anytime, but I'm loving the feeling of hitting 12 weeks. Another big sigh of relief with this one.

Also, this is totally random, but I think this first trimester will always be known as the 'Friday Night Lights' trimester. Nate and I are binging on this show right now to the point of ridiculousness. We have about 7 more episodes to go in the final season and I might cry when it's over. I love Matt Saracen so much it's borderline unhealthy and have definitely sobbed more with this show than any other show in the history of me being pregnant or not. It's freaking fantastic and seems to play on my pregnant hormones just a liiiiiittle bit.

We love FNL so much. I want to watch every episode again but I think this pregnancy will always remind me of it in the future.

What I'm anticipating the most: Having a basketball belly. Can't wait until it's super obvious that I'm with child instead of being just a little chunky in the midsection.

Missing anything?: A-a-a-a-alcohol. Especially being the Christmas season and all. A Brandy Old Fashioned, red wine, or even a cold beer sounds divine right now. DIVINE.

Worries: Still checking the heartbeat with my doppler but not every day, so I'm still worried about something going wrong but it's not at the forefront of my mind at all times anymore. Now I'm getting more nervous about the 20 week US and Quad Screen---still so many problems could arise.

Differences between pregnancies: Woah, this pregnancy is sounding a LOT like Cecelia's now that I read back on it. Wanting to lick a salt block? Pickles? GI issues (didn't even mention it here, but yeah. Not great)? And a higher heart rate on doppler? My 12 week appointment was yesterday with this baby and she found the HR right away, at 170. I am getting more like 165 at home. I guess CC was about 155 right now and Truman was only 140. Are we thinking *girl* yet?? ;)

The only thing I can say about Truman's 12 week pregnancy post is this: you call THAT a bump, girl?  Um, yeah. Definitely showing triple the amount as the first time around.

How I'm feeling: So.Much.Better this week. Energy, an appetite, the ability to function during the day without wanting to curl up and sleep/puke. It's awesome. I even spent my entire Saturday morning on a mission to clean, organize, and purge the hell out of the toy situation in this house. Nothing was left untouched, and then I even cleaned out the kids closets. Yeah, I'd say I have a little bit more energy compared to a few weeks ago.

Sleep: Yes, it's the best thing ever. Cannot believe we are messing up our great sleeping routine in a few more months with another newborn (who will presumably, NOT sleep for a solid year or so). I will enjoy this bliss while it lasts.

Movement: Not really but maybe. I also can't wait for that part of this pregnancy.

The Bump: It's doing that really odd thing when it can be super flat or super huge all within the same day. Bigger after I eat or if I have to pee, and seemingly not even present at times, too.

Milestones: I started working out again (hence the wife beater in the belly picture), because I have the energy and started to feel really horribly disgusting without exercise. I can't justify a gym membership but hope I can keep up with workout DVDs and walking Henry outside (as long as it's above 10 degrees or so). I just feel SO much better about myself and about life if I work out. So this milestone of actually doing something about the lack of exercise was a big one. Prior to this I was too scared and too tired/sick to even care.

Best Moment of the Week: Announcing our news, of course. A great uneventful 12 week appointment. And the fact that it's Christmas Eve and the most magical time of the year anyway. Merry Christmas, everyone!

And with that, I am caught up to real time in this pregnancy. Bring on the second trimester!

Baby 3: Ten weeks {Hidden Baby Chronicles}

Let's get these weekly pregnancy posts rolling, shall we? I'm not sure I want to do a 'form' style post or not, so we will just go with it and switch later if needed. Love being sneaky and drafting a few posts before the internet world can read them.

I CAN'T BELIEVE I'M WRITING THESE AGAIN!!!!

Ten Weeks: 12.10.13

Untitled

Photo thoughts: I'm not sure I can keep this belly a secret much longer. Holy early bump! Definitely showing earlier with each pregnancy, I guess.

Size of baby: going off memory alone, I remember week ten being the prune week.

Cravings/Aversions: Two things come to mind for aversions, and both are slightly devastating to admit. I HATE sugar so much right now. It makes the back of my throat feel really puke-y and this is so far from my normal sweet tooth, it has me worried. I hope I can eat desserts for Christmas. I want to love sugary cereals and never even tried a single Royal Iced cookie that I made the other day. This.Is.Insane. Another really sad part of my daily menu? Coffee is disgusting. I know, this really is Julia typing here---but I cannot handle the acid taste of any coffee. Regular, decaff...it's all horrible. Again, praying my love for a hot cup of joe returns soon or my sense of identity might be at risk. I don't even love downing my usual crazy amounts of water anymore---it just takes effort and tastes gross. I don't know who I am anymore.

I'm loving cheese, though, and can't get enough salt. Port wine cheese is my new best friend and Nate's buffalo chicken dip is also extremely satisfying for me. Which is odd since I HATE anything spicy---this flavor is just amazing, though. You can often find me slicing off pieces of colby jack cheese and combining that with potato chips. My ideal lunch for now consists of cheese, salty chips, a pickle, and a diet soda. Weird. But I will take it because a week ago I was still dry heaving at the thought of most any food.

What I'm loving: Feeling a little more energetic and less like ralphing this week!

What I'm anticipating the most: Hitting 12 weeks, moving onto the second trimester, announcing the big news to the internets, and Christmas;)

Missing anything?: Red wine. Like, woah. I dream about it sometimes.

Also I feel like I'm experiencing true 'pregnancy brain' or maybe I'm just losing my marbles in general. For instance, I spaced on a hair appointment being at 3:00 and my brain told me it was at 3:30 (without double checking the clearly marked calendars in my phone). I HATE being late to appointments, let alone being a 'no show'! I think my IQ is gradually fading into the distance this time around, so excuse me if I seem a little flaky.

Worries: Miscarriage thoughts still hover in my brain at all times, even though we had a great ultrasound and I've been hearing the heartbeat on the doppler. It's just a hard reality to shake, especially when this all seems too good to be true.

Differences between pregnancies: I honestly think I've been a lot sicker this pregnancy, and pretty sure I've never turned up my nose towards desserts before. Then again, maybe I just forgot how awful the first trimester was and having two kids makes it just a liiiiiittle bit harder, too. At week ten with Truman we announced our news to everyone. At week ten with Cecelia we were finishing up our weekly ultrasounds to check on my giant bleed, and I remember that last 'little baby' ultrasound being so cute since we could see her moving.

How I'm feeling: Like a different person compared to last week, that's for sure. Still a little queasy at times, tired but I haven't needed a nap in a solid few days, and emotional. I'm glad that food is semi-tolerable again and that I don't crash on the couch every chance I can get. My boobs aren't as sore, I'm not dizzy or crampy anymore, and I'm not so short of breath.

Sleep: Love it, can't get enough. I did have a few weeks when I couldn't fall asleep at night but that has changed. I make it through the night without peeing but have to book it as soon as I wake up. Not too shabby. Having two kids that seemingly learned how to sleep well is certainly helping.

Movement: Maybe, but I realize that makes me seem a little crazy to claim this early. But truly I feel flutters sometimes and I don't think it's always gas. It probably is gas, but whatever.

The Bump: Present. Undeniable. I know it's not HUGE or anything, and it struck me tonight that I will be much bigger than this post-partum anyway, so this is still relatively 'flat' for now.

Milestones: Heard baby's heartbeat on my home doppler last week, right at 9w0d. AMAZING. Trying not to check every day but it's pretty close;) Heart rate is in the upper 170s-180s and there truly is no better sound in the entire world right now. Also, home doppler = life saver for my anxiety. Fantastic purchase, if you ask me.

Video of one of the first times with the doppler:

Best Moment of the Week: When Nate, Truman, and Cecelia all heard the baby's heartbeat on the doppler. Truman was amazed and kept saying, 'You found it! You found it!' and Cecelia wanted to hold the probe. Nate and I both agreed it's freaking insane to think about another little PERSON being inside there! I think we are still in denial a little bit and can't wait until it seems real (probably after the birth).

Other belly shots I've taken so far:

5--after I took the test but I didn't have a clue that I was five weeks pregnant here.

7--still didn't know how far along at the time

9--bump?

Double digits, baby!

12 weeks: margarita, tequila...

twelve weeks: 11.16.11

12weeks

12weeks
(my new idea for weekly belly pics, totally inspired by Pinterest but excited about putting my own twist on it. My goals are: using the weekly fruit, always taken outside for the best light (yay, WI winters!), take in front of different backgrounds/locations, and use different poses each time. Not going to do the same exact pose in front of the same exact wall each week this time just to spice things up and make this pregnancy it's own. Fruit hunting should be fun and I realize it will be harder to see a perfect inch-by-inch progression of the belly but that is okay.)

Size of baby: a lime (again) if you go with Baby Center or a plum if you listen to The Bump. Either way, pretty freaking big!

Cravings: this week I have been yearning to lick a salt block. Or more specifically, pickles are like a slice of heaven and cheddar/sour cream chips are enough to make me salivate just typing the words. I bought both in the grocery store this week and while checking out I had to fight the urge to eat both containers immediately. Oh, salt. Love you this week.

What I love: the bump, making it to one of the accepted 'second trimester' markers of the world, and telling more people in our lives. Telling is fun. Telling does not jinx a pregnancy. Repeat mantra as often as needed (note to self, mostly---trying to do some inner-self convincing here).

What I'm looking forward to the most: surprising Memaw with our news next week at Thanksgiving with Truman's new adorable tee shirt. It's her 80th birthday and the first time we've made the trip to Missouri for Thanksgiving since 2006. It's going to be quite the surprise!!

Worries: see above re: jinxing pregnancy with announcing it.

What is different this time around: definitely showing more this time around, but otherwise I feel pretty much the same as I described in my 12 week post with Truman.

Symptoms: Inflating boobs, random fatigue (naps only sporadic now, thank goodness), and gas. Will my GI issues ever resolve???

Sleep: yes, please. If only my toddler slept past 5:15 each day.

Boy or Girl: no idea. Still not 'going there'.

Milestones: baby has reflexes now! He can move his fingers, his mouth can suck, and there's a ton of movement going on in there! I felt movement with Truman really 'early' at 14-15 weeks and I swear to you there are moments I feel like the baby is already making me feel kicks this early. Could be gas, but I'm starting to think it's for real. We'll see.

Best moment of the week: did I ever mention I bought a doppler for home use? Yep. Best decision of my life. Nate was not sold on the idea because he knew if I couldn't find the heartbeat one day I might actually go insane (it could happen). But so far, so good, and I even found it really early on my first try at 9w1d although it took a few minutes. This week I found it very quickly with each attempt (ahem, daily---each morning, with Truman's request to hear the 'baby'). Rate in the 155 range which is a lot higher than Truman's standard 140s. Could this mean girl?? I love hearing that precious sound and I think the highlight of my week has been making this something Truman and I do together each morning. So what if he's calling the doppler the baby---he's getting there:)

First trimester, weeks 4 through 11

So basically, weeks 4-10 went a little like this, as far as physical symptoms go:

The Fatigue: This was my biggest symptom with Truman's pregnancy and also made it's presence known during Wren's. This time? So freaking tired that I had to physically force my legs to take steps. Wanted to gouge out my own eyes because they would not stay open. Could not fight the urge to nap, and actually made time to take one every.single.day (yes, even on work days---I have a pretty fab schedule lately, no?). Collapsed into bed at about 9 pm (ahem, or perhaps 8 pm) and prayed to God that Truman sleeps later than 4:30 am because my energy levels were simply pitiful. Sort of wanted to cry when I had to be productive in the working world but usually, once I'm out and about seeing patients I do a decent job at keeping my eyes open. I really feel like the world's biggest loser of a mom on my days home with Truman because it takes so much effort to keep the child entertained and I had no energy. I found that I can get pretty creative while laying my lazy butt on the couch though, so hopefully I haven't ruined my son for life by letting him watch numerous Elmo DVDs while mommy grows a baby. And thank you, God, for having a toddler that takes fatty naps. I would die otherwise. I think Fatigue was it's worst from weeks 6-10 and then I started weaning myself off naps very slowly.

Nausea:
Well, if you do recall, I had basically no nausea with Truman. And then with Wren it was pretty bad by my standards. This time around, I'd say it was more like my second pregnancy because there have been definite moments I talk myself out of blowing chunks everywhere, mostly from weeks 6-9. I did not actually hurl but came close many times, the most interesting of which were when I was working. In patient's homes. As in, I'd have images flash before my eyes where I'd have to ask my elderly patient to use their bathroom and then I'd have to throw up in their 'commode' with raised seat and handles. Or possibly worse---I'd imagine myself running outside and barfing in their front yard. Either option is horrid and totally not professional. But when I'd have a wave I would pray to God with all my might that I could forgo puking at work. So far, so good!

The 'lesser' symptoms:
-Bloat/gas:
Um, yeah. Pretty sure there have been evenings when I thought my baby was composed totally of methane gas. Enough said.

-clogged pipes:
constipation sent from the Devil himself. I'm sure that kicking my heavy caffeine habit didn't help matters in the cloggage department but whatevs.

-super sniffer:
one time I swore that I smelled Doritos while eating an apple. No Doritos in sight, but then that scent rapidly changed to dog farts and I almost lost my lunch while yelling at Henry for tooting. In reality, I don't think I could blame the poor dog for my ridiculous sense of smell. But what a weird symptom, no?

-metallic taste in mouth:
this was really only from weeks 4-6 or so and it made me want to brush my teeth 14 times per day. Did I suck on a penny or what? Nasty. This is the main reason that I completely gave up all coffee, too (I know, double check to make sure you are still reading MY blog right now and not some imposter). I have tried some decaff here and there usually it tastes gross to me. Maybe someday I can befriend Starbucks again, my dear lover who comforted me all summer. But for now? Ick. I'll pass.

-irritability/emotional mess:
poor Nate. One minute I would be on top of the world, happy as a freaking clam, and super excited about every.little.thing. And the next minute I would start crying and assume that he hated me, that I was losing the baby, and the world was most definitely ending. Emotional highs and lows, plus a absurdly short fuse. I hate that I would take out my deranged hormonal states on my husband and even poor Truman (what?! Why can't you just lay still when I change your dirty diaper instead of rolling in it like a crocodile? The world is ending and I can't take it anymore). Luckily they both still love me and knew that mommy just went through the crazies for few weeks. They hope the worst has passed, as do I.

-sore nips:
definitely not as bad as Truman's pregnancy, because I'm pretty sure the old fun bags have been so used and abused that they must not have a whole lot of sensation left in them. But by about week 7 I noticed my boobs hurt when the shower water hit them. And then by week 10 I noticed the girls were plumping up again. Hallelujah.

-dizziness:
totally got the room spinning a few times after standing up. Nothing like taking two steps, then stopping to throw your head between your knees to avoid passing out to prove you are pregnant.

-headaches:
dude. I'm sure giving up my beloved coffee doesn't help matters here but I was doing totally fine until about week 9 when I started getting ragers in the afternoon. Mostly on work days. Not sure if I'm not drinking enough water or what---but I find that if I treat myself to a little diet soda my headache goes away. Magical!

Overall, I think this whole first tri has been pretty comparable to my other pregnancies. Maybe a little worse with nausea, about the same for fatigue, and definitely a lot harder with a toddler. But I still feel like I've lucked out in the symptom department because I never bowed to the porcelain gods---and really, when you are a headcase like me, making your mental sanity waver by the second when it comes to worries about a healthy pregnancy, it's a good thing I wasn't a total wreck in the physical symptom department, too.

I started actual belly pics at 11 weeks so I might as well make the posts more official at that point---finally feeling more optimistic, and able to write out weekly posts for your viewing pleasure!
Remember, in real life I am 14 weeks now so you will have 'catch up' posts for weeks 11, 12, and 13 before the current one at 14 weeks. I know it's confusing, bear with me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eleven weeks:
11.9.11

11 weeks

Size of baby: a lime according to The Bump (or a fig by Baby Center's standards), which seems like the first legit fruit of the bunch compared to teeny poppy seeds, blueberries, and prunes!

Cravings: slamming OJ like nobody's business lately. Never did this before, except while pregnant with Truman...

What I love: having a real bump! Still can't wrap my head around the fact I'm showing this early, though.

What I'm looking forward to the most: Feeling the baby move. And being out of the first tri.

Worries: making it past first tri, plain and simple.

What is different this time around: well by 11 weeks with Truman we had already told the whole wide world. Not so much this time. And of course, with Wren's 11 week mark I believe I was taking that failure of a drug called Cytotec to induce my miscarriage. So yeah, this time it's pretty freaking different compared to both other times at 11 weeks!

Symptoms: This is honestly the first week I can say I have any amount of energy! I haven't needed a nap every.single.day anymore and I can actually walk around the house without willing myself to move every inch. I have noticed my boobs are inflating again (hoo-boy!), I'm gassy and bloated, and really ridiculously emotional.

Sleep: Can't. Get. Enough. May not be napping for 2 hours each day anymore but still love to hit the hay super early at night. And since my beloved toddler enjoys waking at the butt crack of dawn, I believe that might make me more tired during the day. Not waking to pee in the night but when T does wake around 4 or 5 I have to practically sprint to the bathroom to relieve my full bladder.

Boy or Girl: no idea. Not even letting myself attempt to get in touch with my intuition just yet. Makes it seem too real and scary:) I will probably refer to this baby as a boy in my posts, though, just because that is what I'm used to in pregnancy, okay?

Milestones: Apparently, baby is 'fully formed'. Which I guess means that all of the appropriate parts are accounted for at this point?

Best moment of the week: at 10w2d I had an ultrasound that showed a MOVING baby! One that was seriously waving to me, flexing his neck, and wiggling all around. I have never cried at an ultrasound before (at least not from happiness) but came pretty close this time. I wish Nate could have been there to see this little child doing his jig. I think this was also the exact day that I finally started to think positively and let myself get excited about meeting our May baby. Still have to make a conscious effort to remain optimistic but it's definitely getting easier with time.

The dirty details (longest post ever)

So I'm pregnant after a loss...

And boy, that 'after a loss' phrase makes everything completely different this time around. A few days ago I finally sat down at the computer to start typing a few blog posts about the pregnancy, at nearly 11 weeks pregnant. I must have been having a rough mental day because there are four paragraphs full of doom and gloom and depressing thoughts about how difficult it's been for me to enjoy this pregnancy. But you know what? I'm not posting those four paragraphs because I'm choosing to be positive for a change. I will, however, paraphrase my rambling thoughts on the matter of being pregnant again after a miscarriage earlier this year. And then I'll get to the nitty gritty details that you all want to read anyway:)

I'm a worrier as you may have picked up from reading my blog. I worry that posting about this pregnancy will hurt the readers out there who are still trying to get pregnant---after a loss or not. I want those readers to know that I promise not to EVER take this amazing gift for granted. I am fully aware of how blessed I am to be pregnant after a loss just 6 months after my last BFP. And although I hesitate to post all about this pregnancy because I worry I'll hurt others out there traveling my same path, please know that if I didn't post about this I would be the biggest phony blogger out there and I'm pretty sure nobody wants to read a bunch of BS on this blog. Big, big hugs to those trying to conceive, too---there can never be enough hugs, right?

Also, I am definitely not one of those second-time moms who says things like, 'I just don't have time to sit around thinking about pregnancy this time, so it's flying by. I'm way too busy with my toddler to remember how far along I am, or what fruit baby is, and it's not the center of my life anymore.' No, that is basically the opposite of what I am telling you today. Because my journey to get to this pregnancy is incredibly different than most of those moms out there who don't have the time to worry. (I guess I've managed to make time, then). It's just that when you are pregnant after a loss you don't feel comfort in the statistics telling us that we have less than a 3% chance of losing this baby now that we've seen a heartbeat. I've been on the 'rare' side of stats before and it hurts. Badly. It hurt me so deeply that I can definitely say I will be forever changed by my loss, which isn't necessarily a bad thing but I am painfully jealous of women who still have their innocent naivety about pregnancy. I didn't take a single belly pic until 11 weeks this time, nor did I have the courage to write any drafted posts until then. We didn't tell our parents until 6 weeks (and that was only because we needed their support in light of some complications I'll write about in a bit) and didn't tell most of our friends until much later, too. I guess I'm only telling you all of this to preface the fact that this first trimester has been mentally grueling, has landed me in some of the darkest moments of my life, and I guess I didn't expect it to be so hard. I just thought if I got pregnant again THAT was the ultimate goal and all would be right with the world. But oooh, boy---I feel like I just started the roller coaster ride of my life. It's also made me pray a little harder, a little more often, and I've found myself trusting God's plan even more than before---because let's face it, at SOME point I have to realize that I cannot control my life. Especially when it comes to getting pregnant and staying pregnant---that is all up to God's will, in my opinion. And I'm thankful that He is walking with me on this journey.

Dirty details...

After my surgery in June, my OB said we had to wait two cycles before trying again. We listened and then it was our second cycle of trying that yielded a big.fat.positive. So yes, we were trying---very hard. :) Harder than ever before because with Truman we got pregnant on the second cycle of 'half-assed' trying. With Wren we weren't trying at all. And this time we went ALL out. As I was enduring the dreaded two-week-wait before I could test I had basically convinced myself that this might not be our cycle either, and I started looking to the next cycle to plan the 'operation sperm plus egg' attack. I made a mental note that if my period had not shown up by 12 days after ovulation, I'd pee on a stick and hope for the best but I vowed not to test earlier than that. But then I started getting all psycho and over-analytical about every twinge of my body (who, me?). At 11 days after ovulation, I woke up and took my temp like I had been doing every morning and decided if it was even a fraction higher than the previous day I'd have to test then. And sure enough, it was up by two tenths:)

I went into Truman's room at 5:30 on Saturday, September 17 when he was awake and calling for me and we played a bit in the nursery while Nate slept. I was not even nervous at this point, just resigned to the fact that I would have to see a negative test because it would be either too early or I really was not pregnant at all. Eventually I decided to get it over with and dunked one of my cheapie pregnancy strips in my cup-o-pee, walking out of the bathroom without any true anxiety. For real. A few minutes later, after playing with Tru some more, I peeked onto the counter and saw a freaking second line, clear as day, without even using my magnifying glass or special infrared lights. I promptly began to cry, shake, and say, 'Thank you, God!' repetitively like a reproduction-obsessed robot. I went back to Truman and did a little happy dance with my unknowing toddler and then decided that I should probably use another test 'just for fun' because one is never enough to convince me. This was another cheap dunkable test but from a different packet all together. And guess what? Only one line. Cue the excitement slamming to the ground.

After a little confusion, wondering if that first positive test was a total fluke I brought out the big guns: an expensive digital test, reserved only for special occasions like a super faint second line that needed confirming (or a tie-breaker test, in my case). I dunked that puppy in the same cup-o-pee, capped it, and tossed it on our dining room table so I could keep a close watch on it while pretending to play with my boy. Oh yes, the crazies were in full-force by this point and there was no going back now---I willed that test to say 'pregnant' so hard I almost popped a blood vessel.

The little hour glass kept ticking away, deciding my fate as I sweated bullets next to the digital screen. And then, there it was. One word. Pregnant. It was for real, you guys. And sure enough---that one-lined test I had taken about 20 minutes before started to show a faint second line as well. Three tests all positive before 6 am on a Saturday = a pretty frickin amazing morning by my book. I was a whopping 3 weeks and 3 days pregnant which was definitely the earliest I've ever found out the big news. Sort of ridic, right? Gotta love testing early because it makes the first trimester just FLY by (sarcasm).

IMG_5312
IMG_5301

So my husband was snoozing away during all of this pee stick drama in the next room, mind you, and I just had to think of something half-way clever to break the news. I mean, I really wanted to run in there, jump on the bed and start screeching about second lines and digital words and pee cups but I figured that might not be the coolest thing to do to the man. Instead, I wrote on a little post it note: "Daddy, Mommy tested and it was positive! Love, Truman" and had my child hold that little note in his chubby hand until the sperm-giver was awake from his beauty sleep. Truman kept crumpling up the note so I had to keep straightening it out, but I know he was just excited to break the news to his dad.

IMG_5294

Finally, Nate did come into the family room while T and I were watching truck videos on You Tube. I told Truman to give daddy the note and he did so with such pride that I swore he knew something big was happening. Nate just said, 'Oh, thanks, buddy,' sort of clueless and mostly still asleep. I watched him read the words and then watched his jaw drop open to say, 'No way! You tested already?!?' And then I was forced to spew out about a thousand words per minute explaining the three tests, hundreds of emotions, and overwhelming excitement over the results. And Nate totally got it and we hugged and smiled and said, 'we feel good about this one,' together. And we really did. We felt happy and confident and at peace.

Well as you might guess, that contentment feeling lasted about one day. Then the worries crept in and so began my inner turmoil. Do I embrace the pregnancy and possibly get really crushed again if we lost it, or just detach from the idea until it is 'safe' to get excited? I knew I would ask my OB to do blood work right away this time, to check if my HcG levels were doubling every 2 days and whether my progesterone was at an acceptable level, too. What I didn't know at the time is that those tests, and more specifically waiting for the results to come over the phone, were both a blessing and a huge curse. Not sure if I would do the labs again in hindsight.

My HcG did double perfectly throughout the four blood draws I received in those first weeks. But my progesterone started off sort of low, then did a dip to the 'definitely low' mark, before it came back up to an acceptable level and hovered. This was the first time I decided the pregnancy was doomed. Then the next day I spotted brown. I had a real breakdown that day and was convinced that I would absolutely have another miscarriage. But then things were going okay and I started to feel hopeful again. Until I was 5 weeks, 5 days pregnant and at a patient's home for a regular visit on a Monday. That day was probably the lowest point of the first trimester, by far.

I will never forget the feeling that, 'huh, is something dripping out of me right now? Wait. That doesn't feel right---it can't be---am I bleeding?!?!' All while in a patient's house, trying to care for another person and not totally freak the eff out about what just happened in my underwear. I somehow managed to wrap up the session and practically ran to my car where I sat in the drivers seat, unbuttoned my pants, and peeked into my undies to see bright red blood that had already soaked through my pants. 'Okay, now what?" I asked myself. I wasn't panicking at all, but it was more like, 'well, I guess this is how it's going to happen this time.' I drove to a nearby gas station and went to the bathroom to find a LOT of blood down there. Like enough that I had flashbacks to my disgustingly-prolonged miscarriage earlier in the year, which of course made me nearly hyperventilate and wish I could just curl up into a ball and get out of this nightmare. But again, somehow my rational brain took over and I just put on a new pad, wrapped my jacket around my waist, deciding that I HAD to keep working and refused to let my life stop over a possible miscarriage, and then I called my OB to inform the office of my bleeding nightmare.

The triage nurse somehow believed that bright red blood, and an absurd amount of it, was probably okay but she would have me come in to see the OB that evening 'just for peace of mind.' I was shocked that she didn't tell me flat out that, 'Honey, you are having a miscarriage' since that is what I already assumed. But I made it through the rest of my day, calmly texted my husband to say I was bleeding and would go to the doctor that night, and was sort of at peace with how it was all happening. I was sad, too, but I didn't really let myself get too worked up until we had answers.

Nate was able to meet me for the appointment, which was perfect not only for moral support but also because I had to get Truman from daycare right before we drove up to the office. I wasn't sure I could handle getting bad news while tending to my wild toddler at the same time. And I really wanted my boys there with me this time, just like they were when we had our bad ultrasound in April. We were all a team in this and we'd have to sort through the information together.

As my little family waited with me in the exam room, I laid back on the table and tried to talk to God. I wasn't in a bargaining mood, nor was I feeling particularly trusting. But we talked a bit while I stared at the odd florescent light shield that was made to look like the bottom of the ocean. It's really weird what happened next, but as I was staring at this illuminated ocean view, I imagined Nate and I as retirees someday. I thought about how we'd be 70 years old with so many stories to tell about our child-raising years, so many ups and downs that we'd forget a lot of the 'big' issues over time. I thought about Nate and I taking awesome vacations together over the next 30 years and how I want to snorkel and scuba dive with him again, just like we did on our honeymoon---and how this little ocean scene on the ceiling of my OBs office was like a sign from God. Life will go on. You will grow old with this man next to you (God-willing), with this amazing child on his lap, and who knows what the rest of the story will be. Either we will get this baby in May or not---but it's all going to be okay. We'll still look back on these years in our life and smile because they are undoubtedly some of the best I could imagine.

My OB came in and gave me a worried look, which I returned back to her. And then she brought in her ultrasound machine. I knew it would be super early to see anything at all but was happy we could at least get an idea of what my uterus was doing. My OB raised her eyebrows and said, 'Well, we have a baby....with a heartbeat. But I am worried about it.' Um, first---a heartbeat?!?! Before 6 weeks? What an amazing and unexpected gift from above! But of course it's not that simple.

She also saw a large bleed in my uterus called a subchorionic hemorrhage (SCH) that was much larger than the baby, about 4cm big. It could either be 1. The start of a miscarriage, or 2. Nothing at all. The overall message from my OB was that she was hopeful because this little baby had a heartbeat, a beautiful little heartbeat. But she had to be honest when she said that she hadn't seen a bleed this large turn out okay in the end. So we were in limbo. Again. A threatened miscarriage. And that night I did cry the ugly tears and began the grieving process for this little flicker of a heartbeat in my belly, because of course my stupid body would attack it and try to take it down. But after a long talk with Nate I came to realize that we had to hang onto the hopeful feelings. We couldn't begin to grieve yet because we had a real, living baby to focus on and we decided to choose optimism. What's that saying about how you can only control your attitude, but not what happens to you in life?

(our little baby with a heartbeat, and my dreaded bleed)

You might guess what happened next. I stopped bleeding. I had multiple follow up ultrasounds. And every time they would show the baby growing up a storm, the bleed shrinking away, and that little heartbeat getting more and more pronounced. Each visit left me feeling even more hopeful and it made my OB excited enough to say, at just 6w1d (3 days after my initial bleed): "I think we are having this baby, just so you know." I wrote those words down in my journal that night and would read them over and over if I started to feel anxious. By my 7 week ultrasound baby looked like a noticeable blob, by 8 weeks it was a gummy bear, and by my 10 week scan that baby looked like a baby---one that was moving around like crazy. And my bleed was practically non-existent but still hanging around. Being that the champion baby was 50 times the size of it now, when the bleed was easily 3 times the size of the baby in the beginning, I started to feel like my child was a fighter and was pushing that bleed out of the way.

In true Julia fashion, I did a ton of research on SCH's and found a lot of success stories online, many of which had even larger bleeds than me. They don't know why some women have bleeds like this but apparently bleeding in the first trimester is not too uncommon--happening about 20% of the time, and then half of those ladies will go on to having normal pregnancies. I have a hunch that going for a run and, ahem, having some adult playtime together the day before I bled may have something to do with my SCH. And so after that scare, I've been on pelvic rest and instructed not to exercise by my OB as well. A few months ago, I would have gone crazy without exercise but it's amazing how little I care about being in shape now that I have a little baby blob to worry about. It also helps that I've felt the first trimester ickiness----no desire to run at all. And if that means I gain 50 pounds this pregnancy then so be it, I honestly do not care one fraction of a bit. Priorities are in place. And really, I'm pretty lucky that my OB didn't put me on strict bed rest immediately after the bleed because a lot of girls have to wait it out on bed rest. We all know I'm not a good bed rest patient though, considering my OB caught me in Target before Truman's induction when I was supposed to be on bed rest. :)

We waited to tell the internets on the blog and Facebook until 14 weeks because we wanted to surprise Memaw with the news in person, during our Thanksgiving trip last week. If it weren't for that, I probably would have shared at 12 weeks but I really do enjoy waiting until it's this much more 'official' to blab all about the pregnancy to my internet friends. I hope you understand.

If you are still reading this, I congratulate you on your stamina. And now you are sort of caught up on the dirty deets of this pregnancy #3 for me. I guess this mammoth post should be expected when there is SO much to explain with such an eventful first trimester, huh? Hope you are ready for more pregnancy posts in the near future!

First pregnancy time line and milestones:

07.06.09: got my BFP! Second month of 'trying, but not labeling it TRYING'. That was quicker than we expected! Due 03.14.10.

07.17.09: almost six weeks, told our parents and my grandparents the big news. First grandchild on both sides equals lots of squealing.

08.10.09: first appointment, at nine weeks, with transvaginal ultrasound. Saw the ticker! Could breathe again.

08.11.09: started telling close friends and other family. Letting it all sink in...

08.17.09: ten weeks, started telling the whole wide world including this blog, facebook, and work.

09.01.09: twelve week appointment, with doppler. Heard the ticker ticking away at 160 bpm! Total weight gained = 1 pound.

09.20.09: fifteen weeks, felt the first baby movement! Lots of jabs and flutters.

09.29.09: sixteen week appointment, heard the heartbeat again, this time at 145 bpm. Total weight gained = 6 pounds.

10.09.09: almost nineteen weeks, started wearing a Bella Band for my snug-fitting pants. Still no full-fledged maternity pants yet, but getting close!

10.23.09: almost twenty weeks, Nate was able to feel the baby kick for the first time. The next morning we both saw my belly move, too. Whoo hoo!

10.27.09: twenty week appointment, heard heartbeat at 153 bpm. Total weight gained=13 pounds. Gulp.

10.28.09: big ultrasound and IT'S A BOY! Weighing at 13 ounces and moving around like crazy, our son spread 'em wide open for us to see his gender. Nate has never been so happy.

11.24.09: twenty-four week appointment, heartbeat at 138 bpm. Total weight gained=18 pounds. And this is the first week someone flat out asked me 'Are you pregnant?' without already knowing the answer! Must be those maternity tops that I'm obsessed with now:)

12.21.09: twenty-eight week appointment, didn't ask about heart rate because was focused on the scale number. Total weight gained=25 pounds, so I guess I'm right on track for my OB's goal of 40 pounds total. At least I'm still running 3 days a week I suppose.

2.2.10: thirty-four week appointment, and all of a sudden I have high blood pressure. Ruh-roh! Lots of testing, a few days of bedrest, and bi-weekly appointments to watch everything closely.

2.8.10: thirty-five weeks: maternity pics and more doctors appointments, but still working full time tentatively!

2.22.10: thirty-seven weeks: full term, baby! Not dilated at all, but labs are still good and BP is stable so I'm still working full time and napping like a champ. Lots of Braxton-Hicks contractions and The Waddle has begun, too. This is what the end feels like!

2.25.10: Doc put me on bedrest officially since my BP is now up a bit, I gained 5 pounds in 3 days, and have a little headache. Maternity leave starts early!

2.26.10: And now my urine lab came back positive so I officially have Pre-Eclampsia. Going to check into the hospital tomorrow and be induced right at 38 weeks. Baby boy better be ready!

Post-partum recovery, round two

Belly pictures for third pregnancy: our little fruit baby!

bellypixforblogfinal

Timeline for third pregnancy:

3w3d: BFP!! Earliest test ever, at just 11 DPO

4w2d: questionable progesterone. Good HCG. Brown spotting. UGH.

5w5d: started gushing bright red blood. Baby found on US, heartbeat seen. Large SCH found as well, 4cm x 2cm. It's easily 3 times the size of baby's sac.

6w1d: Baby still ticking away, bleed stable at 5cm. MD feels optimistic! Weekly US to watch the bleed fade and baby grow. Some brown spotting after each US.

9w1d: got home doppler, found baby's heartbeat within minutes. Whew! In 170s range.

10w2d: another great OB appointment, HB 178 at the office, and US showed a moving baby! Very big sigh of relief at this point. A bump is starting to appear. Starting to tell more friends and family, all will know the news by 12 weeks (told at 8 weeks with Truman's pg). Weight gain: 2 pounds.

12w0d: first hints of baby kicks, super early but amazing!! (felt these at 14 weeks with Truman's pg)

13w6d: Told the internet. Passed Wren's EDD. HB in the 140s-150s. Weight gain: 3 pounds.

15w0d: Trying out the Bella Band to fit the giant belly (was at 19 weeks with Truman's pg)

16w0d: Felt baby move from the outside today. Officially in my maternity clothes! (was at 20 and 24 weeks respectively for Truman's pregnancy)

18w0d: Daily, big kicks from this little baby. Clean Quad screen. Undeniable bump. Weight gain: 8 pounds (basically same as Truman's pg)

18w4d: Nate feels baby kick from outside! (was at 20w with Truman's pg)

19w0d: A stranger commented on my belly and told me 'congratualtions!' (not until 24 weeks with Truman)

20w1d: big anatomy scan! It's a HEALTHY baby GIRL!!! Measuring in the 70th percentile for her growth.

26w0d: passed glucose screen, up 20 pounds from my starting weight, which shows baby girl is having a huge growth spurt and so is her mommy.

34w0d: blood pressure is still good! Holla! Only up 29 pounds at this point too, which is a lot better than when I was at 36 pounds with Truman's pregnancy. Baby girl is head down and I'm getting a lot of strong, timeable BH contractions already. Cannot believe I might get to skip an induction this time.

37w5d: growth ultrasound, because baby was suddenly measuring smaller at 37w appointment after always measuring perfectly. Baby surprised us with an estimated 7lbs 10oz for weight already, landing in the 70th percentile again.

39w5d: Cecelia is born! Total weight gained this time 34 pounds, was 43 pounds with Truman.

Belly Pictures for my last pregnancy:

thirdtimebellies5-40

Timeline for my last pregnancy:

5w0d: BFP, holy crap. I just stopped breastfeeding last month and haven't had a single period since before Cecelia. No clue how far along I am, but that is an AWFULLY dark line.

8w0d: First appointment, all is well and we see a real baby with a heartbeat on ultrasound!  I found out I'm due 7.8.14. Feeling generally miserable and the sickest I've ever been with pregnancy.

9w0d: Doppler success at home! Heartbeat 188 bpm and the sweetest sound I've heard.

11w0d: Told the internets since I feel huge and ready to embrace this pregnancy, feeling more energetic and less sick. HR 170s.

13w0d: Baby taps! Will never forget how amazing this is. Bump is out of control, pull some maternity clothes from the attic. HR about 155 bpm now.

16w2d: Felt baby from the outside! HR 145-150 bpm now.

19w4d: A stranger finally noticed my bump and commented! About time. No longer using the Doppler at home, feeling baby move a TON for reassurance.

20w0d: Big ultrasound and it's a healthy BOY!!! A very proud little boy. Amazing day in general.

20w2d: Nate finally feels baby boy kicking. We decide on a name shortly after. I'm up 11 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight which feels like an accomplishment considering my raging appetite.

29w0d: Okay, I'm feeling it lately. Baby boy is incredibly active and I'm tired, but still loving pregnancy as a whole! Up 22 pounds which is right where I was with Cecelia's pregnancy.

35w0d: Lots of contractions, some timeable. Walking pneumonia (second round of antibiotics this pregnancy, since I had strep throat a few months ago), up 27 pounds, and eagerly counting down the days until we meet this boy! Everyone thinks my bump is incredibly small. I do not feel small. I feel tired and like this child is my most active yet.

37w2d: 1 cm dilated (never before labor!), 50% effaced, up 30 pounds, baby is head down, and mama is hitting the wall. He feels like a bowling ball between my legs and I think this belly has dropped. Any day now.

39w2d: 2 cm dilated, up 31 pounds, still not in labor. Hmmmm. Cannot believe he hasn't come yet but glad he is comfy in there (I guess). Finished with work yesterday, so maternity leave has officially begun. Nate is off work all of next week and my parents fly in to see the baby soon....so he better come. Will induce at 40w3d if he doesn't choose another birthday before then. Come on baby!

40w3d: Labor began at home a few hours before induction. Porter is born at 12:12pm!

Birth story part one
Birth story part two
Birth story part three

Timeline for my LAST last pregnancy:

3w6d: BFP. Um, what? This was not in our plan and we now know that day nine in my cycle is a fertile time. WOAH.

5w3d: Lots and lots of red blood, just like Cecelia's pregnancy. Sure that this is a miscarriage, we try not to get too sad until we have some answers. This baby may not have been planned but it is oh, so wanted right now.

6w5d: Ultrasound shows a baby with a heartbeat (126 bpm), measuring perfectly. Also another huge SCH, like with our girl. But the heartbeat and tiny baby are the best sights ever.

8w5d: Follow up ultrasound shows a bigger baby and a smaller bleed (1.9cm). We even saw our little gummy bear move on the screen, heart rate was 168. Feeling positive!

9w3d: Dug out my home doppler, found the heartbeat at home at 178 bpm. There is no better sound in the world! Feeling pretty miserable this first trimester, exhausted and pukey but par for the course.

12w1d: Finally tell our children the news. Truman jumps up and down, Cecelia just stares at me, and Porter hits me and says, 'No, not funny.'

13w3d: Told the world on the internet! I think I'm feeling baby taps and I'm absolutely showing this fourth time around. Doppler checks show heartbeat is in the 155-160 range. Up two pounds. Maternity pants feel oh, so good but still look pretty ridiculous.

15w2d: Definitely feeling baby taps, and even felt this little person kick me from the outside. I forgot how amazing it is to feel baby moving in there.

18w2d: Truman felt baby kicking! Magical moment, as T is this baby's biggest fan. Also had a negative quad screen last week. Whoo hoo!

19w5d: It's a boy, and a healthy baby on that ultrasound screen. Thank you, Lord! I'm up seven pounds, Cecelia and Nate have both felt the baby kicking, and a stranger noticed my bump for the first time.

26w6d: Failed my one hour glucose test, passed the horrible three hour test, up 19 pounds, but feeling good overall. We are finally 99% set on a name, too.

37w0d: Doing really well! Becoming quite obsessed with Hypnobabies and having a peaceful, calm birth this time. Up 30 pounds, am 1cm dilated and 50% effaced, some Braxton Hicks contractions but nothing too awful. I sort of feel 'too good' and think I might be overdue again but we will see.

39w6d: OB appointment proves I'm 3cm dilated, 75% effaced, up 34 pounds, and it was my last day of work today! I have an induction set for next week but I truly don't think I'll need it.

40w0d: my water broke at 4am! Wallace arrived later that day.
